United Women’s Group outraged over court order for Dangriga man to marry minor

There is outrage over the successful bail application of a thirty-six year old accused of Carnal Knowledge upon a fourteen year old girl from the Stann Creek. Since we reported the story on Wednesday night, our blogs have been overflowing with angry comments from viewers that we have had to filter. Earlier today, the United Women’s Group (UWG) of the People’s United Party (PUP) weighed in on the matter. The group also expressed outrage, adding that in fact the fourteen year old girl has a child with Hipolito Itza. In the Supreme Court on Friday, Itza was offered bail on the condition that he must marry the minor within a specific time. The UWG says it absolutely rejects any proposal made by any person or authority in Belize to institutionalize or formalize the continuation of the abuse, sexual, physical, mental and psychological of any child in Belize.

The UWG is also concerned by reports that an accused who sought bail for the

stabbing of a female police officer at her place of work, the Dangriga Police Station, has been ordered to report to that place weekly as a condition of bail.

Some 14 year old girls are not 14. Mayan girls used to marry at puberty regardless of age. Just saying. If there is abuse and/or any criminal behavior, I agree with the outrage. Again, not all 14 yer girls are children; some are more woman than most women. Just saying.

“Natural Law”, brought to you by the Government of Belize.

  3. Indy says:

at some point natural law is not natural and science trumps it. Medicine says that those teenagers are not ready physically or mentally to be in a married relationship. It can be detrimental to their development and more so if they are trying to have a child. Maternal mortality is high around the world because of children marry older folks.

  4. Disgusted says:

@ Moses, some 14 year old girls are “not 14” in mentality because they have been forced to experience things far beyond there years. The girl in this case has not been protected by her family, nor by the courts. This is a gross miscarriage of justice, which only encourages the repeat of this type of behaviour. Belize does not want the reputation that pedophilia is not only condoned, but encouraged (by forcing the marriage of a minor to protect the perpitrator).
