Estranged wife charged for assaulting cops

A domestic dispute on Christmas Day which led to a police officer calling for backup ended in an attack on Police Constable Carl Smith by his estranged common-law-wife, Sharlet Bainton. Smith was involved in a domestic dispute at his home on Gaulin Street in the Ladyville area where he called for assistance to remove his belongings from his home. That was when PC Frank Garcia and PC Mathias Cholom responded to the call for help at Smith’s.  During the process of transporting the items PCs Garcia and Cholom exited Smith’s home and that’s when they claim Bainton attacked them. According to the report, Bainton grabbed Garcia by his shirt and according to PC Cholom, Bainton verbally insulted him.  In court this morning thirty-five year old Sharlet Bainton, appeared unrepresented before the Senior Magistrate Sharon. Bainton was charged with one count of aggravated assault upon PC Frank Garcia and one count of using insulting words to PC Cholom. She pleaded not guilty to both charges and bail was offered to her in the sum of two thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. Up until noon today Bainton was unable to meet her bail and remains in police custody at the Queen Street Police Station.
