Soldier takes his own life
Apparently in addition to Roberts, the youth who drowned in Dangriga and the homeless man in the park, there was a fourth person who died during the Christmas Holiday. It was not put into any police report but the Belize Defense Force has confirmed that one of its own, a veteran of over a decade, took his own life. The day after Christmas inside his home of Red Bank Village in Punta Gorda, Mateo Teul hanged himself. According to his service record, the thirty two year old man had been a soldier for fourteen years. Official police investigation regarding Teul’s death has not been revealed as yet.

Soldiering is a hard profession, and it can take a serious toll. I think the BDF should collaborate with some EXCELLENT health care professionals, maybe from overseas, to develop a special programme of mental health support for them. We owe our people in uniform the best we can give them.
