Findings to be displayed on Burns Avenue

Awe says that the objects recovered from downtown San Ignacio are likely linked to an average family and will be prominently displayed at a new Welcome Center to be erected on Burns Avenue.

“So, as we speak, you know, we have quite a number of people assisting us, obviously the staff from the Institute of Archaeology, students from Galen and from Sacred Heart that have worked with us in the past and even some tour operators, some tour guides and even Cayo folks and visitors alike are helping us with some of the excavations as we speak.”

“Dr. Awe, in terms of the magnitude of this discovery, how would this be classified?”

“Well, you know, in terms of other discoveries this is not any big tomb or burial of elite people.  It’s probably the household of a common level family but nonetheless it’s very interesting because it is providing us with some information about ancient Cahal Pech.  You know, we have found several of the things that they have been eating like fresh water snails and we’ve found bones of animals, deer antlers and like I said, you know, the bones of probably male individuals.  So it’s very exciting because we’re learning more about Cayo and our plan is that we will place all these objects in the new Welcome Center for San Ignacio so eventually everybody will be able to see the discovery that we’ve made.”

According to Awe, the preferred scientific method used to determine the age of the objects is radiocarbon dating; however, they are dating the relics based on the period during which the ceramics were popular.
