Education Ministry investigates forced haircut

On Thursday of last week we reported that a thirteen year old student’s hair was shaved off at the Victorious Nazarene School in San Jose Succotz. The mother, Maria Barrera and her son, Nair Leal, told News Five that last Monday, four teachers held him down and the school principal shaved off some of his hair with an electric hair clipper. The mother said there was no explanation as about the strange incident. The Ministry of Education reacted today. Education Information Officer, Arlette Gomez, told News Five that the matter is under investigation.

Jose Sanchez

“I’m sure the ministry must have heard about the incident at the Nazarene school where a young man claims that some teachers held him down and just shaved off a portion of his head. Is the ministry looking into this?”

“If you can recall Jose, just last year we made the move to remove corporal punishment from our schools. And we just want to let the public know that the Ministry in no way condone teachers inflicting any kind of physical punishment on a student. This incident; the speculation or accusation is that the teachers held down a child and shaved the child’s head. This is certainly not something that the Ministry of Education condones. We are currently investigating this incident through the Cayo District Education Center and our Belmopan office and we will certainly get to the bottom of this incident. The management of the school is also working along with us to ensure that all children and their parents feel safe when they come to school. And again I have to reiterate that this conduct certainly not condoned by the Ministry of Education and Youth.”

According Barrera, she hasn’t received any complaints of bad behavior about her son.

I think she needs a man, dats why she behave like dat… She has no rite to do dat, but if u ask anybody at that school the majority of teachers are one single family… Thats why they think they can do anything they please…..

That principal did a lot of things last year in the other school in which she was and her management defended her. Now is the time that her management open the eyes and see that that principal beleives that she is God and that she can override some rules just because her uncle is the local manager. She needs to go home!!!!
