PM explains why the double election

Dean Barrow

Prime Minister Dean Barrow explained why he is pulling the trigger prematurely, more than a year before the five-year term of his government expires. He also indicated he was willing to enter a debate with the Leader of the Opposition Francis Fonseca if the conditions are right. The P.U.P. and the VIP have raised concerns because thousands of new voters have been registered in the past month. And for years a cleanup process or re-registration process has not occurred to verify that people are alive or moved to a different constituency or country. That cleanup process is long overdue and the PM said regrettably it won’t occur until after the elections.

Dean Barrow

“It’s impossible to time that in the time that’s left. Nomination day is I believe the seventeenth of February and elections are the seventh of March. The reregistration exercise will have to be postponed yet again. I can’t in terms of a leaders debate say yes or no; but I can say yes in principle, I can say yes depending on the conditions, I can say yes depending on who will moderate it—but lawd man I can’t just tell you yes or no.”

Jules Vasquez

“You would be so inclined though? You would not be disinclined?”

Dean Barrow

“That’s what I like with you, you’re good. No, no, on a serious note; of course if the circumstances were right and we could be assured of fair play in the debate, I would be prepared to participate in that exercise. Strategic considerations in terms of the election date. Two elections are going to be far more costly than one election.  I assume, in fact let me say that I hope sincerely that the exercise of verifying the signatures for the referendum petition will certify that the referendum is to be held since my reading of the law tells me that could not have been giving the timing of the submission of the signatures that that could not6 have been on the same date as the municipal elections. If we had done the general elections separate and apart from the municipal elections, we might have ended up having three plebiscites in the course of this year with a separate bill for each of them. We have to bear in mind the questions of cost and so I certainly thought that doing the general and the municipal in one would assist us to cut down the cost. I said at the start and I want to repeat; no matter which way you slice it, elections are divisive. This country continues to face many challenges; the international economic environment, as you know Jules, appears to be going to hell in a hand basket. There is serious work to be done—work that requires a kind of firmness of purpose and unity of effort that cannot be had to any reasonable degree in the face of elections. Let’s get the elections over with so that as I said, whoever wins can get on with the business of governing this country and improving the lives of our Belizean citizens.”

Mr. PM you have failed miserably as a leader and party, very sadly so only your close relatives, political cronies, and the greedy who already have, has benefitted from the GOB. Now you have the audacity to call a “hurry come up and vote election”, with the hope that all your newly sworn in citizens whom were hurriedly and secretly registered, will vote UDP. Furthermore, now you are talking about “governing the country and improving lives” of your newly registered citizens who apparently benefitted from your pseudo political scheme. Despite, the misery and havoc you have wreaked on the havenots, nameless and faceless working poor. Your arrogance and narcisistic behavior coupled with your truncated myopic vision is being flaunted all across the jewel. Yet, you have continously, wilfully and maliciously shown gross disrespect to the Belizean populace, coupled with insults to their intelect filled with disdain for the havenots/nameless faceless Belizeans. Mr. PM who do you think you are fooling? With these talking heads and sound bites, skilfully tailored to confuse and deceive the majority of the uneducated populace. Wake up, rise up Belizeans show the current GOB that the sleeping giant is not a fool. Mr. PM you most certainly appear to be a master of deception.

  2. Freetown Voter says:

I don’t know what Dean did to you but you are truelly ticked off at him. The way you used adjectives to describe the PM, if I did not know any better, I would have thought you were talking about Pol Pot. Or were you?

  5. belizeanheat says:

I think there is only one solution to keep things relatively in check. A PUP City Council and UDP GOB. What other choice do we have?

  6. Steve says:

@belizeanheat. Your solution is not a solution but suggesting a bigger, bigger problem that will become a point of return for the good of Belize. For example, your are suggesting greater corruption at SSB with the write off; more names added to the list. More corruption at KHMH, BTL, Maybe, Belize city might improve because there will be a great check and balance that the gov’t will put to city council; BUT the country will go to destruction. Why is Barrow calling early election? Barrow is very fanciful and boastful of his sterling performance as a PM. Why doesn’t he sends out a draft of what could possibly be his Budget 2012-2013? Now if you suggest to Belizeans to elect at least 2 VIP reps, I would agree with you. Belizean voters beware, VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE!
