Leader of Opposition says it’s a blow to the Party

Francis Fonseca

This afternoon, News Five sat down with the leader of the opposition, Francis Fonseca. Fonseca, who took over the leadership last October, has been hit with the worst blow in modern political history coming from within his own party in the run up to the general elections. Fonseca was taking the resignation in stride and said the party will move on.

Francis Fonseca, Party Leader, P.U.P.

“I got a call from Cordel Hyde and he called to inform me that after having met with his family and his Lake Independence P.U.P. committee last night he had decided that he would no longer remain as the standard bearer for Lake Independence for the Peoples United Party and would not be contesting the next General Elections.  He was very frank with me.  We had a very cordial, respectful discussion and he was very open with me and I believe he has said this in his public press release.  He also said this in his letter as well but he indicated that the primary reason for his decision to stand down was really a personal one having to do with his sons illness. I respect Cordels decision and, you know, he has obviously been a very, very outstanding area representative for the Peoples United Party, a very successful representative for the Peoples United Party.  He has never lost an election in Lake Independence, a three time, three term representative.  So we were looking forward to a convincing victory in Lake Independence under his leadership.  So we are disappointed.  Obviously it is a blow to the party but, you know, we have to be decisive.  We have to move on.  We have to find someone who is credible and who is acceptable to the Peoples United Party Lake Independence Committee and the people of Lake I and I hope we can do that very quickly.”

  1. Mervin Lambey says:

On November 4, 2008, then Senator Barack Obama overcame contrived obstacles and became the 44th president of the United States of America. Five weeks from now, Hon. Francis Fonseca will likewise overcome petty distractions and obvious sabotage to emerge as the modern-day George Cadle Price, a man of the people, for the people, by the people. “No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will bind his house.” Mark 3:27. From what I can see, the Hon. Francis Fonseca doesn’t appear bound to me, how does he appear to you?

  3. Do it right says:

Francis da di Modern day George Price? Really? No leader past, present can be compared to George Price. Francis is far from even being considered in the same sentence as Mr. Price. He won’t even beat Lee Mark.

  4. CEO says:

Will politicians ever learn that to get re-elected it is jot so much of a tough job: just do the right thing and people will vote for you.

  5. Bulba Martinez says:

To, “Do it right”. If this is how you do it right, I pray to God you do no wrong. May He Rest In Peace. The past is history and the future is a mystery. Let us deal with today and then tomorrow without any distraction to the dead. Respect ok?. Your opinion mean something but let it be positive and constructive towards a better Belize. If you noh have noting good fu seh, dehn shet up. Those without sin, let them cast the first stone.

@Bulba MArtinez. You need to read what i said over bc i didn’t say anything negative, just saying truth sonny. The man is not even in leadership long enough to be compared to the one true leader Belize has ever had. It is with a negative mind that you read my comment and misinterpreted it as something negative. Truth is, every politician in this country should strive to be the kind of leader that Mr. Price was. I in no way said anyone was perfect or without sin. So don’t try to come off sounding righteous then chastise someone for your misinterpretation. You are being the same cynical critic that you are condemning in your statement above, perpetuated by the belief that you are somewhat better.
