1st case of Trial by Judge without a Jury
The first case to be tried by a judge, without a jury will be against the two men charged for the Attempted Murder of Attorney Rodwell Williams. The trial was set to begin today and both accused men, Akeem Thurton and Ricky Valencia, appeared before Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin. But it was brought to the court’s attention that Thurton has no attorney while Valencia says he is yet to finalize arrangements with his attorney. Chief Justice Benjamin adjourned the matter until Wednesday to allow Thurton and Valencia time to get proper legal representation. Williams, the law partner of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, was shot in an execution attempt on June first, 2010 as he was leaving his office on Albert Street. Two men reportedly opened fire on him from an adjacent parking lot and he was hit once on the abdomen. Williams had to undergo a series of surgeries, both locally and in the US, but he has made a remarkable recovery after the near fatal incident and is back in private practice.
