Molestation case ends on technical argument

Filodelfio Reneau

In October 2010, an eight year old girl claimed she was molested by a man who allegedly befriended her while she was doing homework at her house. According to the minor, fifty-three year old Filodelfio Reneau, a Belize City resident, followed her into a room and fondled and caressed her. Reneau was charged with a single count of aggravated assault of an indecent nature and was able to get bail through the Supreme Court. His case ended today with an acquittal due to a technical argument submitted by his attorney, Simeon Sampson. Citing the case of Rupert Simms, Sampson argued that the Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith did not test the ability and knowledge of the young child before allowing her to testify. He further argued that there was no collaborating evidence. At the time of the incident the child was eight and was not sworn in and tested before the court as to whether she knew the difference between right and wrong. The Chief Magistrate dismissed the charge on Reneau.

    compare to this article: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2012/02/10/supreme-court-testimony-competency-ruling.html

Some differences in specific case facts however the parallel is the same: why didnt a new trial get ordered in the Belize case?!

The incoming government had better make updating our laws with regard to abuse of children a very high priority!

  2. RadicalBelizean says:

In my view a child who has no experience/exposure to this sort of abuse would never be able to explain this sort of scenario. He Filodelfio can feel relief because of technicality. However I am sure once a paedophile always a paedophile. EIther he’s done this a child or two before or he is now empower to know he got away with it and so he may be able to doit again. Parents have to be more vigilant with their children, even with family members.

I also can help but think what a name but have a look at these words:

Paedophile Filodelfio Pedófilo, Oh well my overactive brain playing with the letters again.

  3. Stand up says:

Simeon Sampson’s name appears on all these murderers who walk free, as well as child molesters, etc. That man has some serious answering to do before God as these are released back into society to do the same again to others.

  4. brown eyes says:

that !@#$%^& son of a man should have been sent to jail. This System in Belize is to weak and those child molesters are getting away with alot of crimes. It just disgust me to see this man smiling, that wat he must have been wen he was !@#$%^ touching her. if it was my child i wud kill his !@#. and the man who defended him, wat if that happened to ur child and she told you, you believe her to the judge told you dat you needed prove, so she let the man go free, how the !@# would you feel, ah? damn @$$!@#$….

  5. Storm says:

Like murderers must be hanged, sexual assailants must be castrated to prevent repeat offences.

  6. ProudBzean says:

I agree with you @Stand Up notorious attorneys like Simeon Sampson and Dickie Bradley and our crappy Police are responsible for a lot of these murderers and child molestors walking free….

  7. Freetown GYAL says:

how can the church march aagainst gay and lesbians and not a word against child molesters. now you see why all the imported child molesters in Belize, because it is clear that our legal system is stacked against the child

  8. so sad says:
