Schakron admits giving up US Citizenship
Nomination Day for General Elections is on February seventeenth. And the only candidate that may have a glitch on that day is the P.U.P.’s Yolanda Schakron. Schakron’s Guatemalan birth is not the issue; it’s the fact that she is a sworn citizen of the United States. Schakron made her “as Belizean as Rice and Beans” statement earlier in the week and she is committing to it. The Lake Independence candidate was seen on Tuesday for at least two hours inside the fortified gates of the United States Embassy in Belmopan. She admitted today that she is in the process of renouncing her American citizenship. According to Schakron, she is the victim of theft as her official passport, its pages having been shown elsewhere in the media, was reportedly stolen. Despite the absence of the passport Schakron says that the renunciation of her U.S. citizenship should be completed in time for the March seventh General Elections.
Yolanda Schakron, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Lake I
“My passport was stolen from my home. I have reported that to the US Embassy. I will be reporting that to the police here in Belize City. I have started the process of renunciation of my US citizenship. I visited the embassy yesterday. I’ll be going back again. I am well on my way to doing that. I am ready to serve the people of this country; the people of Lake I. unlike the U.D.P. who many of them have dual citizenship, I have nothing to hide, I have no problem in giving it up because I am a Belizean and this is my country and I have seen the suffering and the pain of the people of Lake I and I am determined to fight for them and to make their lives better.”
Isani Cayetano
“Miss Schakron, the process of renunciation is not an overnight one; it is something that carried on over a period of time before it’s completed. Has the US embassy offered an expedition process to you… happen in terms of timeliness leading up to March seventh?”
Yolanda Schakron
“Oh yeah, it will be completed before March seventh—I can tell you that. I already did step one. I will be doing the other step. Once you do the step two—that is the oath of renunciation—it already shows that you have renounced your US passport.”
A Guatemalan wants to get into our House of Representatives. Now tell me what is the agenda here. She hates Belizean authorities to the bone and now she wants to get in the House? Lake I, this is not about racism but man, please not this woman. This is a curse in politics now. Wow!!! PUP in latinization. I believe now. “Only a fool breaks his own heart!!!” Never!!! Don’t take us for fools You Big Blue Machine. I was going your way but not with this one. It is a slap in the nose. I have no option but go Green orr Red!!! My view.
I don’t think it’s a good ideas ms yolanda to give up your us citizien
It’s not a 100 present sure that the pup is going to win. I think Belize need to form a new party, because both party is not going anything for the people.
,
I for one will be waiting to see the Certificate of Renunciation as soon as she gets it.
I don’t know if it is just me, but I have this little feeling that Yolanda is lying about her passport. We all know that a US passport is like gold. May be she thinks she can fake its disappearance and claim that it was stolen so that she can continue to use it when she wants to go to states after election. I don’t know, may be I am wrong but I cannot ignore this little suspicion I have.
The timing of the theft of Schakron’s Passport is very fishy.Fool di talk but dah no fool the listen.
Why should it matter if someone stole your passport after you’ve renounced your US Citizenship? It’s not like you’ll need it.As a result it shouldn’t be a big deal.File a police report and everything should be fine.
@ Jah Kid…FYI Denny Grijalva running in OW Central is also a born Guatemalan. But unlike Ms. Shackron, he does not have a fighting chance to beat Johnny. The UDP is doing everything they can to distract the fact that they are in Govt and have failed Belize miserably. Barrow, said he would reduce the cost of living NO MATTER WHAT! He has no excuses to make. The udp has to go…Stop imagining and lets get Real. There is a better future with the PUP
What as A@@ and what will u do when if your party fails?????? WHICH IN REALITY IT WILL IF NOT NOW IT WILL IN 5YRS!!! OH I KNOW U WILL THIEF AND GATHER YOUR STRENGHT WHILE YOUR IN IT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND SURVIVE ON THAT WELL WELL LOOK WHO IS THE A@@ “ME” OR WE THE BELIZEAN PEOPLE IF U GET ELECTED.
Ms.Shackron giving up your citizenship is not a good idea, keep your status…
Perhaps Ms. Schakron should read some of the IRS laws for Renouncing her Citizenship. Most US Citizens think very hard to do so since Uncle Sam wants his pay back.
Expatriation on or after June 17, 2008, may cause an expatriate to be subject to IRC § 877A, which was enacted as part of the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act (HEART) Act of 2008. Generally, IRC § 877A imposes income tax on the net unrealized gain on property held by certain U.S. citizens or green card holders who terminate their US residency as if their worldwide property had been sold for its fair market value on the day before the expatriation or residency termination (mark-to-market tax). The Treasury Department and IRS have authority to issue regulations under IRC § 877A.
The provisions of IRC § 877A apply to all U.S. citizens and former long-term permanent residents who expatriate on or after June 17, 2008, (a covered expatriate) if they meet any of the following three tests:
Net Income Tax Test: For the five-year period before expatriation, the individual had an average annual U.S. income tax liability of at least $147,000 in 2010 (this number will be adjusted annually); or
Net Worth Test: The individual’s net worth is at least $2,000,000; or
Certification Test: The individual fails to certify that he or she satisfied all applicable U.S. tax obligations for the five years before expatriation.
Every man or woman has a right to decide his or her own destiny.Schakron is a business woman she knows what is in this political arena for her.
Elgin Martinez, what you are saying makes a lot of sense.
Belizean, you hit the nail on the head…by the way one of my fellow bmpanese composed a very good song called “Let Your Vote Count” and I invite every Belizean to go out to the polls on March 7 and exercise that right. Lookup the song on youtube.com “Let Your Vote Count” by Chami-Ka, our very own reggaeton artist in Belmopan.
Elgin Martinez I agree. I am really curious to see the outcome of this whole situation. I can’t imagine that Ms Schakron would be foolish enough to make false claims about losing her passport to US authorities, or lie about her US citizenship status.
It is only my opinion, but I believe that if you were not born in Belize you should not be able to hold any government post particularly if you’re from a country that lay claims to our land. I am sure Ms Schakron has integrated into our society, however we can never be sure about our security and one’s loyalty. Well, after all she is displaying this with the various citizenships she’s acquired as a matter of convenience, and only too willing to give up. I think you will find that in most industrialised countries foreign born are barred from certain government post in the interest of security of their country.
Well I suppose politics is lucrative business, you only have to look at some of the UDP and PUP politicians and I am sure they know exactly who they are. In the interest of transparency, when will the monthly salary of these politicians be published so the tax-payers see what you think you are worth. Only one politician did anything altruistically for Belize and sadly we buried him last year.
Schakron’s decision is but testimony of her convictions that brings out her true intentions for Belize. What about high profile leaders who flee to safe land when danger looms in the horizon but are presently raping our country and will later leave the country. How about those who in 2005-2008 came loud and determined to “defend” Belize but now in the final analysis are “thiefing” Belize? Well done Schakron–you only need, if elected, to prove your true intentions for Belize. Belizeans would hold you accountable.
This woman got to be a complete idiot, many people try their best to come to America the ligitimate way while others come illegally. Do you know how many people would like to be a U.S. Citizen? its one of the most coveted thing bestoed upon individuals. People just dont give up their citizenship to run in an election for mediocre notoriety. She is a fool thats all I can say, they need to investigate her and make sure she is actually eligible to run in Belize. But then again with their screwed up political ideologies she may just end up in the National Assembly. LMAO.
guatemalan, belizean, american, wow only in our country. lol
