Cop detained after shooting incident at Picame Bar

There’s another incident in Orange Walk Town where a police sergeant shot Jorge Celis in the eye and it is under investigation.  The police version is that on Monday Sergeant Roberto Novelo, who is attached to the Belize City Crimes Investigations Branch, and his brother, Moises Novelo were at the Picame Bar in Orange Walk and had an altercation with three men who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Roberto reported that he recognized Francisco Mendez and Celis, but knew the third man only by face. The Sergeant also claims that he held on to his licensed nine millimeter glock pistol to prevent Mendez from taking it, but three shots accidentally went off. Celis was injured and taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and later transferred to the K.H.M.H. for treatment of fragments of lead in his right eye. Police have since recovered three expended nine millimeter shells and the pistol was retrieved from the sergeant along with twelve live rounds. He has since been detained and Police are looking for Mendez.

This is total B.S!!! Watching news for Feb. 22nd and this a$$ clown is already out. What is happening in this country? I want to know what the cops have against the government that causes them to look the other way. Every cop in this country is now empowered with the knowledge that he can kill the innocent at will and get away with it and they can take what they want and get away with it. It is official we have to be as afraid of the police as we are of the criminals even more so because they can kill us and be protected by their own, they will even destroy evidence to get away with it.

    Nigel,
You need to calm down. This story has not empowered police in the way you say. Yes the incident happened, but no, it did not make any policeman feel that he can do as he pleases. In fact, we will see what happens. We will see if this Celis person decides to speak, to go to court on the issue. If we don’t keep the pressure on, it might be that this officer does get off.

If that happens, THEN you can start complaining, but we as the public will have to share some of the blame. Let’s not make that happen.
