Blackout in Belize City!
At about ten minutes to five o’clock this evening, the city lost power. According to the state owned Belize Electricity Limited, faulty equipment at the Magazine Road substation was the cause for the outage. At this time, electricity has not been restored and we have learnt that lights will not be turned on until after ten tonight. The blackout has unfortunately delayed our newscast and as a consequence, the Dickie Bradley Special and other programming are also running late. So just bear with us for the delay.
State owned BEL!!!
This is ridiculous for this time and age to have recurring blackouts in Belize. I thought it would stop when government took over BEL!!
That person up there made it sould bad to be a state owned utility. Imagine the UDP has to take back the companies from multi-nationals that George Price took years to build up for this nation.
@concerned, wait it will get lots better. When rate cuts are imposed for political reasons and maintenance and investment is sacrificed, there is only one result to be expected. Ask folks within BEL and you’ll find out. Governments and business don’t mix, no matter which government!
Turn out the lights on Barrow.
@think about it, you are so right. Our utilities reached their high point under private ownership. Maintenance is way at the bottom of any Government priority. They have a “why fix what’s not broken” mentality. And when it broken they patch it up. Look at the street. You will get the picture. Privatization has its negative as well as its positive impacts. And Prime Minister Barrow knows that. He will sell those utilities again. You watch and see. After he and his family done bleed them for all their worth.
@javier solis, “…that George Price took years to build up”? Do u remember governmnent-owned BEB? Blackouts were the norm back then if I recall…..
I agree with Think-About-It. Governments don’t invest and run businesses efficiently. Prices might be low but service is low to match the price LOL
I heard Dickie Bradley was going to punta for the first 10 minutes of his special.
I believe that power outage happends even in the most up to date systems in the world today. Everything has a certain time of service.
I can see darkness in 2012, GST at 15%, retrenchment of public officers, water shortage.
Ovidio your comment was the only level headed comment on the topic. I am not fond of the current government and may I say neither am I of the past government but there will for ever be blockouts in this world. The main objective is to reduce them because we cannot eliminate them.
And…THEY HAVE MONEY TO GIVE AWAY TO PEOPLE to pay their mortgages, OR BUYING the ELECTION.
INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS TO BE MAINTAINED…always. DON’T THEY KNOW THIS????????
i talked to a long time worker of BEL, he told me barrow said that they need to use equipment they have now because no investment will be made in vehicles and equipment
Hey, i agree that blackouts cannot be totally eliminated. But look here, why do we have to knock our governments that they are inherently incompetent? I dont think that stigma is affective again because i see WASA,, BTL and SSB working very good with the professionals there. Please dont beat up on our fellow Belizeans who are very educated these days and are very efficient in their jobs. AS to the PM he has not set foot at BEL from nationalization, so how can we say he is interferring in the manangement of the Comapny? Stop and thik, man and no talk fool all the time.
how one black out is turning things into political matters very funny. typical reactions before elections. black out will never be eliminated, man made it it will fail sometimes when we least expected it or want to. jeez people relax breath and think something more productive out of this issue.
This is total nonsense blackout for so many hours Belize is following the path of Guyana with these long god damn black out looks like the more Guyanese they bring into belize the more we getting like that messed up country
