Freak accident kills student during soccer game
Up north, a young boy had an untimely death. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a St. Paul’s Primary School Student, in Corozal. The boy was playing football when he was crushed by a metal goal post on the field. He was immediately transported to the Corozal Community Hospital but didn’t survive. News Five’s Andrea Polanco headed north to report on this tragic incident.
Andrea Polanco, Reporting
Shortly before five on Monday evening, eleven year old Eric Quiroz met his death here on the Andres Campos Football Stadium, in Corozal Town. Eric was playing football with a small group of boys. This metal goal post which was on the field toppled on top of Eric. He sustained fatal head injuries:
ASP James Moreira, Deputy O.C, Corozal
“Our investigations reveal that around four-fifty or so, he was along with three other youth, they were playing football at the Campos Stadium and when the goal post fell on him and he was rushed to the hospital. He was bleeding from his nose and mouth. Whilst there, the doctor pronounced him dead.”
So how did goal post kill this little boy? It appears heavy and still in good condition, and police say he was not playing around with it; matter of fact, he was a little distance off:
ASP James Moreira
“The way it looks like, it cannot be that he was hanging on the goal post, because the distance he was away, he was about eight feet away when the goal post fell; so, automatically he couldn’t have been hanging on the goal post. When I went there yesterday, I noticed that the wind was pretty strong, so we are still investigating the matter to exactly find out what transpired.”
“The goal post itself, is it deteriorating, with respect to the condition of the metal?”
ASP James Moreira
“Not exactly. It is a transferrable goalpost that you can use and can be taken anywhere for that purpose.”
According to residents of the area, this field is commonly used for football. One person in the area says that it was the first time that Quiroz had joined the group of boys to play ball. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
