Cabinet endorses Rosewood Moratorium

APAMO which comprises numerous conservation NGOs, on Monday applauded the suspension of harvesting and exportation of rosewood. Letters of support were sent to the Prime Minister and to Minister of Forestry, Lisel Alamilla describing the moratorium as “the first positive and assertive step in mitigating the environmental crisis caused by the unregulated harvesting of rosewood in Toledo, which has threatened the survival of the hardwood species in Belize and potentially increases the negative impacts of climate change on our region.” The list of NGOs that are backing Friday’s moratorium includes the World Wildlife Fund, BTIA, Program for Belize, Friends of Swallow Caye and SATIIM.
