Free orthopedic clinic this weekend

Khandice Tillett

A pediatric clinic in rural communities concluded today in Caye Caulker, but another initiative this weekend to provide free medical attention to young persons. The World Pediatric Project is having an orthopedic clinic this Sunday at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Patients with health issues including leg length discrepancies, Blount’s disease, bilateral Vara or “bow leg”, fractures and bone cysts can get a check up and, if necessary, surgery; all free of cost. News Five spoke to the Program Coordinator, Khandice Tillett about their latest mission.

Khandice Tillett, Program Coordinator, World Pediatric Project

“We’re having an orthopedic clinic on Sunday and that’s going to be for screening. It’s a surgical mission so that means that the patients seen, if they require surgery the surgeries will be done between Monday and Thursday.  The doctor that we’re bringing is Doctor John Davis, he’s an orthopedic surgeon out of Sacramento, California and he’ll be working alongside our local surgeon Dr. Roberts from Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.”

Delahnie Bain

“What are the conditions that he will be seeing?”

Khandice Tillett

“He will be seeing patients needing orthopedic surgery; artogriposis, hip dysplasia, webbed hand, webbed feet, stuff like that; anything to do with orthopedics.”

Delahnie Bain

“Is there any criteria as to who can benefit from this clinic?”

Khandice Tillett

“Well, we’re doing pediatrics so that means from birth to twenty-one years.”

Delahnie Bain

“And how can interested persons get registered or get involved in this?”

Khandice Tillett

“Well, they could call my number is 651-9986 or they could contact the country representative, Mrs. Milagro Garel at 610-2606.”

Delahnie Bain

“Do they need to bring along anything when they come?”

Khandice Tillett

“Well, if they have any previous x-rays that would be an asset but if they don’t they could just show up to the Karl Heusner at eight o’clock and we have an x-ray department there. So if they need x-rays they could have it done the same day.”

Delahnie Bain

“And it’s an all day thing?”

Khandice Tillett

“Yes, we’re going to be seeing patients from eight in the morning to around five in the evening.”

The numbers to register again are 651-9986 for Tillett or 610-2606 for Milagro Garel.
