Mega development set to begin near Belize/Mexico Border

A major announcement was made today that was picked up by US networks, such as MSNBC. A US company DHS holding is claiming that franchises such as McDonald’s and high end stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch and Nike will be opening in Belize. The development is called Cenote Falls shopping Centre and is described as a world class and family friendly shopping experience. It is to be built on a forty acre parcel of land up north, through an Export Processing Zone. The first phase will include negotiations with major retailers and restaurant chains.  Charlie Barrett, President of DHS is quoted saying that “Mike Rohling, the company’s C.E.O., will be working to bring in retailers such as McDonald’s, Abercrombie & Fitch, Nike, and other fine stores.” And according to Rohling’s research, nearly one hundred million dollars crosses the border from Belize into Mexico each year due to Belize citizens taking advantage of retail options not currently available in Belize. The content of a letter from the Minister of Economic Development, Honorable Erwin Contreras is also referred to, promising incentives to the group for the investment. We were unsuccessful in reaching Contreras for comment on the announcement of the huge investment.

The Jewel needs all the good foreign investment it can get to create decent jobs at fair wages. I hope this project will become one. If it is, hopefully more will follow.

  2. Just Sayin says:

SO FOREIGNERS GET INCENTIVES TO OPEN A BUSINESS IN BELIZE BUT THE LOCALS HAVE A HARD TIME!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Be Real says:

Just like Galleria Maya, Stake Bank and many other glamour paper investments this will not happen. It is probably a scam to launder money.

It does not take a rocket scientist to know how much money crosses the border of Belize. If our politician just observe whats going on in the country and try to do the best for the people of Belize.Look what happen at the free zone, not even the belizean people can go shop in there. The more the consumers spend in the country the economy will get better.

Five minutes of research and you will realize that “DHS Holdings” is just another on-line gambling venture looking for a safe haven outside of the USA.

Why is an on-line gambling license so important to this project that it warrants it’s own prominent section on their website ? Why if this is such a “mega development” is the minister unavailable for comment? If a development of this scale was actually going to take place GOB would be holding a massive press conference with the minister, the PM, and a marching band! GOB blows their own horn for a lot less, so why do we hear about this “mega development” from outside sources?

This nonsense of McDonalds and NIke is to distract the local population while 40 acres of land gets hustled away by well connected people. The only thing coming to Belize will be a few computer servers that will process millions of dollars from on-line gambling, NONE of it taxable in Belize because it will take place safely inside the EPZ. But some well connected person is going to wind up with 40 acres of prime commercial real estate. Five years from now we will be asking “hey, what ever happened to that mall and the McDonalds?”. But today, we should be asking hard questions not just believing everything we read on the internet as if it was the truth. The public is gullible enough already, we need the media to step up and be more skeptical.

  6. Eye In The Sky says:

Ya man Keep Dreaming ! Who is going to get a multi million dollar loan that they will not pay back.
We went through all of this before with Glen Godfrey, Novelos, Luke Espats, and so on.
Someone will get rich and the rest of Belizean will continue to be as poor as dirt and have to keep killing each other to eat.

  7. busha says:

States comes to Belize!!!! LOL, Now people are going to be really broke!!! Save u Princess money now!!!!

  8. wayne says:

so tell me, eye in the sky, poor people have to kill each other to have something to eat ?
thats a very interesting statement… interesting cos it is unbelieveable stupid, idiot !
if u think that way u should be happy about this project, cos there will be another good place to commit robberies “to eat” without hard work, dumb!@#$

This sound like the Galleria Maya hustle all over again. They too wanted to set up a hotel & casino with a “data processing center” (aka on-line gambling) operation on 45 acres in the free zone. In the end all we got was about US$6M extra added to the national debt while the cronies laughed all the way to the bank. Now it’s time for the sequel with an all new cast of actors.

It saddens me to think of unhealthy retailers such as McDonalds and Nike in beautiful Belize.
