Is the Gang Truce in Jeopardy?

The Gang Suppression Unit has been quiet since a three man Commission determined that they had used excessive and unjustifiable force on Taylor’s Alley residents. The Ministry of National Security apologized but Taylor’s Alley said no thanks. They asked for compensation and that was met by a swift response… NO. So that’s where that is and Minister John Saldivar embarked on a national tour of the police formations. In the past two weeks, areas of the City have again become a war zone. So is the gang truce holding or is it sustainable? In our weekly poll many believe it is not and that the shootings and murders are the work of gang affiliates. This afternoon, Minister of State Mark King who has responsibility for the Gang Truce says the truce is ongoing, successful and strong. According to King, who was not answering phone calls, there are regular meetings and daily interaction between gang members and himself.  King says in a release that “We have many projects in the pipeline that will involve members of the Gang Truce program and will provide more jobs to these individuals. I maintain that I will work close with these young men and will give them a chance for positive change. Their human rights will be upheld.” King ends his release saying that most if not all of the crimes being committed lately are being done by individuals who are not part of the gang truce programme.

The idea of negotiating with criminals is disgusting. Bribing them and appeasing them is much worse.

With this GOB, CRIME PAYS! Quite literally. In what universe will that principle yield happy results? Not this one!

Sooner or later, the people of Belize must eradicate the gang problem, not feed it. If you subsidise behaviour, you get more of it; if you punish it, you get less of it. It has always been thus.

  2. Elgin Martinez says:

Dean Barrow is the one that gave these gang members the imprewssion that they are incharge as a result this carnage is going to continue.Thesame people were voted back into office then what do we expect change?Hell no,we’re going to continue getting thesame result.

  3. from the west says:

They are not part of the program, that is why they kill. They want free $$ too. I am sure there are a lot more people contamplaiting how they could get free $$. I have never before heard of a government sanction criminal reward program.

  4. From the West says:

These criminal may not be part of the truce, but they want on, heck they want free money too. I am sure there are a lot more contemplating becoming criminals. This is the only government sanction criminal reward program I have ever heard of.

King ends his release saying that most if not all of the crimes being committed lately are being done by individuals who are not part of the gang truce programme. How can he say this, well it would seem to me that we know exactly who are comitting these crimes and if so how comes these persons are not arrested. The mere fact that there have been no arrest is a good enough reason that they dont know who is responsible. I believe that Mark King does not have a freaking clue.

  6. RedBwai says:

Truce? truce? what truce??? therenever was an will never be a truce…

  7. bzean says:

so you take our tax money from law abiding citizens and give it to gangs?
those that are not in the truce are comminting these crimes to get GOB to start giving them money too..
how bout those hard working people, goin from door to door to sell bread, vegetables and ask to chop your yard, who is looking out for them?
instead these same gangs go and rob them at the end of the day. what a sad situation for a country to show who has priority….

  8. WILD ROSE says:

those monies should be invested in the Police Department and the Judicial System; criminals should not be pampered but needs to get the message loud and clear; you will be found and when found you will be dealt with to the full extent of the law…this program is unsustainable.

  9. j killa baby borther says:

I totally agree with redbawi. Never will b a truce in belize city

  10. islander says:

    MR. BARROW

You Met with them, Negotiated with urban terrorists…..WRONG

You gave them free money, to stop killing….”FYI it hasnt stopped” WRONG

You punished and removed the only policemen willing to do something about it “GSU”. WRONG

    WE ARE REPEATING COLOMBIA’S HISTORY!

  11. Santa Elena Resident says:

    Questions to ponder:
Which country other than Belize has a Minister for Gangs?
How much money will be allocated to this Ministry for the budget that yet has not been presented???

  12. islander says:

For those who like GOB are uneducated here is a little education.

The Colombian government wanted an easy way to end the violence so they met and made agreements with Pablo Escobar.

One of which is to have Col. Martinez and his search block disbanded or at least to stop targeting Escobar fro his criminal activities….IN BZE “The GSU was castrated for treating criminals the way they treat the law abiding?

The violence eased against ordinary cops’ but members of the search block and Colonel Martinez were still targeted by Escobar. IN BZE “Gang members stopped killing each other BUT they now shooting students and chinese grocers”.

Colombia’s government decides that Escobar has violated the agreement so they move in on him. IN BZE “Despite the gangs killing innocents and shooting students GOB is in denial and does not have the cohones to start a counter attack “.

Col Martinez and his search block are back on the hunt for Escobar with the help of Delta Force.. IN BZE “Will the GSU be allowed to do its job and actively go after the criminals? Will we allow the military branch of the DEA to help the GSU?

A Paramilitary team called “los pepes” being lead by Carlos Castano starts to actively kill Escobar’s relatives and lawyers using tactics being taught by Delta Force to the Search Block. IN BZE “Will the GSU get tired of GOB’s innaction and go after the gangs when offduty? or at least train civilians to do so OUT OF FRUSTRATION?

In the end Pablo is killed ……. THERE WAS A LONG ROAD AHEAD BUT COLOMBIA IS A VERY SAFE COUNTRY NOW….You dont believe me? You do not see Colombia in the top ten list of the world’s deadliest countries but little BZE is number 5.

We need to actively go after these gangs, their lawyers and anyone who harbors them!

  13. concern citizen says:

That is the worst thing that a government can do. Instead of the death penalty, lets just give them money. Who came up with that bright idea? Maybe we all should start killing each other. Then we can go to dean barrow office to collect our check. Who new? Crime does pay!!!

  14. JESSEJAMES says:

@ ISLANDER…..MIEN YOU COULDNT HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER….WOW….I AGREE WITH YOU A MILLION %

  16. Gappi says:

Islander you almost had it right, the simple truth is that Colombia needs it’s cocaine transported to it’s biggest importer which is the United States of America, and belize is the main vein on how it can reach the states. We know that people in the GOB are famous drug lords and loss money when they made or said that there was going to be a truce. For the past couple months there were murders happening in the country but not as fatal and cruel as it has been happening for the past couple weeks and why you ask it’s simple. The GOB uses the Gangs as their mules. Although the Gangs just don’t get because the gov’t has designed it so they can maintain their hands clean like Pontuis Pilate. So what the GOB is doing is pushing as much drugs as they can in the streets so the Gangs being held by poverty do every and anything to get their hands on a dollar. If the Gangs of Belize were explain how this is set up their would be a lot of Government Workers go missing or would be killed. So i say why not let the gangs snitch on some of the Big Wigs and stop being used like a mules. Since all hell has broken loose maybe it’s too late and the GOB is winning the game….nuff said
