Pageant contestants have a license to teach

A pageant with a different flair is taking place this weekend. It is being staged by the Belize National Teacher’s Union Belize Branch and the winner will be crowned Miss BNTU. The participants are teachers from the district, who won’t be competing in swimsuits or doing the curtsy; in fact they will be judged for portraying courageous and insightful women in the community. The show which features six contestants, promises to be fun and entertaining. Pamela Baird of the Advertising Committee tells us more.

Pamela Baird, Advertising Committee, BNTU Belize Branch

“The pageant has a theme and the theme this year is ‘Women of Strength.’  We have six contestants and all these contestants will be depicting different women from Belize that display strength; some of them are Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, Ms. Marie Sharp, and Mrs. Audrey Matura Shepherd and so on.”

“And I know you also use this event to raise funds as well, can you tell us about that?”

Pamela Baird

“Yes, the proceeds from this event will be used to subsidize the various events that we have throughout the year for the Belize Branch Teachers’ Union.”

“So in terms of the fun and excitement, Belizeans can expect a lot come the twenty-first of April?”

Pamela Baird

“Yes, they can expect a lot. I am inviting the general public out to come and see the teachers strut their stuff off and they are going to be showing you all the talents. It’s not only teaching that we do; they have many hidden talents so I am inviting everybody to come out and get your monies worth for sure.”

The Miss B.N.T.U. pageant is set for Saturday, April twenty-first at the Holy Redeemer Parish Hall. Tickets for adults are going for eight dollars and five dollars for children under the age of twelve.
