Taylor’s Alley Gang Leader, Arthur Young, killed in police custody

There are still lingering questions over the killing of Arthur Young, who police believe murdered the other gang leader, Pinky Tillett on Friday night. Young evaded the long arms of the law for many years and more recently, he was attached to the Conscious Youth Development Programme. Young also surfaced as the leader of the Taylor’s Alley affiliates in the recent stand-off with the Gang Suppression Unit. Immediately, after Tillett was killed on Friday night, there was word that Young had pulled the trigger. Then on Saturday, it was reported that Young was to hand himself over to the police. That did not happen and by this morning, he was dead. But there are more questions than answers. News Five’s Andrea Polanco also has that story.

Arthur Young, the leader of Taylor’s Alley Gang was allegedly shot and killed in the pan of a police truck around mid-night on Sunday. According to police, Young resisted arrested and a scuffle ensued, whereby Young was fatally shot by a police officer. Young was wanted in connection with the murders of thirty-one year old Shelton “Pinky” August, leader of George Street Gang and twenty-three year old Kamille Andrews. According to police, they received information that Young was hiding in this abandoned house in Vista Del Mar:

“We were looking for a suspect in connection with that double murder and it was confirmed that last night around 11:15, police received information of the suspect, one Arthur Young, the known leader of the Taylor’s Alley Gang, was hiding in a house in Vista Del Mar. the house appeared to be abandoned. Police entered the house; found Mister Young in one of the rooms. He made an attempt to escape. He was apprehended and whilst he was being escorted to the Eastern Division Station on Queen Street, on his way there, he made another attempt this time to disarm a police officer that was in the back of the pickup with him—the pan of the pickup. A struggle ensued, the firearm went off and Mister Young was fatally injured.”
The gas station where Tillett & Andrews were killed is fitted with surveillance cameras, and while police say they are using the images to help them serve the double murder, was Young positively identified in those images?

“We have viewed a surveillance video. The content of it I will not disclose at this time, but yes we have viewed it.”
But if Young was shot accidentally, the acting Commissioner was careful in offering no details of the accident:

“You understand that the concerns of many persons I’ve spoken to this morning are somewhat skeptical and they feel intuitively and this is an opinion that it may be a state sponsored execution. How would you respond to a criticism such as that?”

“I will not speculate, I will not jump to any conclusion. The matter is under investigation. As soon as it is through, we will know the true facts and you will get whatever detail you need to get.”

“However sir, are you able to at least say if he was shot more than once or one time?”

“I have already made it quite clear that the matter is under investigation.”
Young has a long history of run-ins with the law, dating back to early 2000. Over the last ten years he was in and out of the courts on a number of charges from murder to the possession of unlicensed firearm. He was one of two men charged with the August 2002 shooting death of Jose Chavarria on West Canal. After he was fingered in that murder, Young fled Belize for the U.S. that same year. He was deported back to Belize in October 2006; was remanded for a brief period, released and subsequently went into hiding. He was later acquitted of the murder on a nolle pros motion. A year later he was also named in the stabbing murder of Calvin Young in November of 2007; however, the case was thrown out in January 2010 after the key witness reportedly suffering temporary amnesia. But years later, Young would categorically state that kept away from ill-reputed groups:

“I changed my last name at that time because people might hear my name and get kinda nervous and I don’t like to go around saying my name because I don’t really do things in public you know. I try my best to stay far away from these and other groups of peoples. I’m not active in the streets of giving no young boys nothing in no kind of way. When I talk to the youths it’s gotta be positive. People know me in society, but the ones that don’t know me think that I’m into just evilness and that’s because they don’t know my whereabouts. I chose to live privately and secret just so I don’t get harassment. But every time the police force or whoever is behind this trying to bad mind me, I don’t know if it’s something personal which I never sent any threat to the police like that.”
In April of 2010, Young was named as a person of interest after police had raided a house in Vista Del Mar where they found drugs and a lathe machine with a sound suppressor or silencer for weapons. An associate of Young, Errol Haynes, was found in the home. Whilst, Young wasn’t present at the time of the search, documents belonging to him were discovered and he was wanted in connection with that incident. Whilst in hiding, Young had called News Five to say that he believed police wanted him dead:

“I really fear for my life because they out to try and kill me. I even heard that couple weeks they had a meeting about me saying that wherever they find me, whatever, I know they got the job to do but they reach the point they are harassing me now. I really don’t know where to turn to because nobody is on my side. And the way I move, I don’t really go and tell this one and tell that one. But you know today I just sit down and say this is one of the best reason I need to bring it to the public also. For the truth, I didn’t do anything wrong for them to try give me a charge I didn’t know about.”

“At this point they say you are a person of interest because you rented the house. Does that bring any comfort to you?”

“Well what I heard is that my name is on the charge sheet. If I’m a person of interest because I’m renting the house then my name should not be on the charge sheet. They went to the house and I heard that they found my old driver’s license and my social card. So I’m saying maybe they are trying to put me there now because I heard couple weeks ago that whatever they can hold against me to send me to jail, do that. I don’t know why these people are dealing with me like this.”

“So you don’t know anything about the equipment used to make silencer for handguns or books on gun use and tactics?”

“I don’t know nothing about that. I don’t know what they took out of the house. All I heard is that they went there and took Errol Haynes. I don’t know the details of nothing. I’m not even there at the time when I heard that. I was somewhere far away from there.”

“I’m not, I’m in hiding because I fear my life with the police. So I’m in hiding, I already spoke to my attorney and got I some advice.”
However, Young went into hiding. In May of that year he was caught at the Chetumal Airport after he attempted to board a flight enroute to Mexico City with a fake passport. He later walked free from those charges. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
While police report that Young was being harbored at a house in the Vista Del Mar area, which is owned by Robert Mariano, News Five today received a call from Mariano who says he has nothing to do with it. According to Mariano, he moved out months ago and now lives in the US.

I wonder how this case will go sounds very fishy if a man is handcuffed how can he do what they say he did mmmmmmmmmmmm o well one less to worry about but police should be investigated by a separate entity to verify cause of death.

I think the media is trying to sensationalize this story…A gangster is dead!!! Our streets are a little safer now. In the words of Rt. Hon. Would meet his maker either by the hands of the police or by his rival street gangs.
The police got him first and in defence of the murder is that Young resisted arrest and was shot and killed. That is as political an act as any protest can get.
Tomorrow there will be a new Arthur Young, Pinky, etc on the streets again, and nothing will have changed on the streets of Belize..

No matter what crime you commit the Government has no right to execute you that is why we have laws in Belize, but the Government feels they are above the law. so what happens when they feel that one of us innocent citizen does them something wrong??????? Whats the fuss about, this happens everyday in Belize city. Only different, uniform persons did it.
What different from the “gunmen” is the Police Department and its officers, if it murders citizens of its country? In the “gang war” the Police Department remains the only unbias force capable of providing stability if fully supported by the Government, whoever forms it. When, however, the Police conducts extrajudicial killings, it becomes an unremovable stain that blurs the concept of right and wrong. The Police should remain upright and unquestioned in the fight against this “gang war” that is plauging the City. Killing off citizens is promoting vigilante justice and inevitably the innocent get caught up in such forms of “justice”. Regardless of who the persons is or what he/she is accused of doing, EVERYONE IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVED OR PLEADED GUILTY. We should all fear when this basic aspect of criminal justice is neglected.

I wonder what some of the citizens of Belize really want. When this human garbage was running around and shooting little kids sleeping in their beds they call on the government to hang him and people like him and now that this terrorist is dead they have a moral issue with it. It is understandable and not unfathomable to think that maybe the police can do the same to anyone at will and it has happened before many times over. But this human garbage wasn’t just anyone and he only took from society and had nothing but tears from countless mothers eyes to give back and the bottom line is that this mistake that should have been aborted before birth won’t be around anymore to continue doing the only thing he was good at and like storm said “Belize is safer today” and yes it is a moral victory. The police did what the judicial system could not do; they brought true justice to this human waste. Thank you very much to the officer who pulled the trigger and made karma catch up to this festering pustule and I hope that they have no compunction in doing the same to the rest of them. It is wrong to rejoice over the death of someone but the humanity was all gone out of this subhuman thing when he died and thus he had no more reason for being.

No one should be in a position to call themselves gang leader and get away with it. For all we know Police was the one that set up and had pinky killed, just to have a reason to seek this one to kill. Now, do people ever wonder where they get money to rent house in Vista Del Mar, and provide for their family? Ask their family members, the answer would be something along the lines of “Hustle”. Yeah, some hard-working person got robbed or home was broken into whilst at work.

If laws were being obeyed & our justice system was working properly, we would not be locked up in our homes, sleeping on the floor behind burglar bars & whatever else we feel can protect us from stray bullets. WHY DON’T WE PRESSURE THE AUTHORITIES TO STRENGTHENED OUR LAWS AND JUDICIARY SO WE COULD RAISE OUR CONVICTION RATES. ALL OF US, MOST OF US JUMP ON THE BAND WAGON FOR THE DIFFERENT LAWS TO BE AMENDED FOR EVERYTHING ELSE AND NEVER ADVOCATE FOR RIGHT LAWS TO BE CHANGE AND AMENDED, I REFUSE TO GO INTO THE DETAILS OF THOSE LAWS BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THEM. SEE I LEARN LONG AGO THAT IF WE DON’T DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY WE WILL END UP SUFFERING MORE.

Sadly, Belize has got itself into a crisis that normal law just cannot correct — violent crime is out of control, our police are not trained well enough, our witnesses live in fear so they “forget” or disappear [or are killed], our DPP is overworked and underqualified, and juries have no evidence, no confidence, and no commonsense.
A century or so ago in the States there was the “Wild West,” probably not unlike Belize today. So good people formed bands called “Vigilance Commuittees,” or just vigilantes. The best and most honest citizens were in those committees.
Everyone knew who the dangerous criminals were, and the vigilantes caught them and killed them, one by one.
Then when the crisis was ended, the committees disbanded, and people built a new community in peace.
It has worked before, and with the right leadership, it can work here and now.

The country is being overrun by criminals. Belize is in a state of civil war. The war on drugs is a real war, and millionare drug dealers pitch your sons and daughters against each other to profit off them. If the GOB ordered the execution then it was about time that the GOB did something about the ruthless killings of sometimes innocent bystanders, citizens and often times children. War is war, there will be causualties on both sides, but at the end of the day the GOB has a duty to it’s electorate. At 317k that the population stands now it is unthinkable that the country is being held bisiege by a few hundred lawless killers. Violence begat violence, when it was your children out there lying in the street bleeding, or dead in the drain from a stray bullet, you somehow wanted justice and maybe never got it. The good book says a life for a life, how many lives did these two guys have extinguish over the years. When have we become a society accepting of violence against our law abiding citizens. GOB, job well done, take our streets back and use this second term to take Belize back to what it use to be. The lawful citizens gave you a mandate, carry it out.
All i can say another one down he taught he bad resist arrest grab for the gun got shot oh well. i would have shot him too . one less crime lord on the street . i know am happy one less guy to worry about shooting sensely in the streets. Well, sad to say I don’t believe that a struggle ensue, but plainly the cops off him. I believe like any person with common sense, will ask the question how can a man in handcuff fight for a gun, but then again he might be a super criminal, you know someone like James Bond, Jackie Chan lol. I have no problem with cleaning up the street of these criminals, but I am just saying the law stands for justice and if the law(cops) aren’t standing for justice and taking it upon themselves to be judge and executioner, then believe me people will be taking their own justice, and there will be no need for cops. It is illustrated that the chaos has began in our jewel. All we can do is pray for God continual guidance, grace and mercy upon us.
We all know that the police killed Mr. Young….However, the government needs to weed out all the corrupted police but I guess they will never do that.. But I am sure that after Mr. Young’s death, more blood will be shed. Who are the they to take away someone’s life? You should never shoot a man in his back or when he is helpless and of course that is what they did. I am not trying to justify his actions..but the Police did wrong and I am sure that they will never be convicted. I am sure that many of his close friends or members already know the police who were all involved in his death and they will surely suffer the consequences of their actions.
I just hope and pray that Belize will someday be the same peaceful Belize that I knew when I was younger.

@ Bgroovy….. The man must have come out and threatened the police and their family because he was always being followed. Put yourself in his shoes. How would you have liked some corrupted policemen who are being paid under the table of course, apart from his GOB salary to killed you. Imagine….The same policemen who are to protect the people, are the ones doing the crimes. I have to admit the fact that there are some good policemen who are doing a good job, other want to do a good job but are intimidated or afraid and are the rest are just downright NO GOOD!!….but life is a circle and believe me…its just a matter of time….We don’t give life and we should not take away life..
I just hope that the PM and the Minister of Police are doing things the right way…. and not taking sides for anyone involved….. because if they are not… then they too will suffer the consequences later. God help us all.
