Police Corporal Vidal Cajun vindicated of weapon’s charge

Vidal Cajun

Police Corporal, Vidal Cajun, who was charged for keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in November 2010, was acquitted in the Stann Creek Magistrate’s Court late Wednesday evening.  Cajun was attached to the Independence Police Station down south when he was arrested for a nine millimeter pistol and ten rounds of ammunition that the Police Department claimed were unlicensed. At least six officers testified against Cajun, but his attorney, Dickie Bradley, was able to prove to Magistrate Edd Usher that Cajun did not commit an offense since Section thirty-three of the Firearms Act allows any person in the security forces to carry weapons and ammunition while carrying out their duties. Cajun testified that the firearm was assigned to him by the department while he was working in Corozal and that he continued to use it when he returned to the Independence Police Station. The police diary in which he signed for the gun was also presented as evidence that it was a service weapon. Cajun was arrested on the same day that an alleged drug plane landed on the Southern Highway in the Bladden Reserve in Punta Gorda. He emphasized in court, however, that while he was one of the officers guarding the plane, his detention was unrelated. It was also noted in court that the weapon was not found during a search, but that Cajun handed it in at the station.
