Possible opposing views within U.D.P. and P.U.P. on Referendum
The issue of how to resolve the territorial claim has been divisive among the public and in political parties. According to Smith, despite sensitization on the subject there may be opposing views within the ruling United Democratic Party as well as the Opposition.

“I’m sure there must be some public awareness campaign over the whole issue, what’s involved and so on. I don’t know if the government would go so far as to encourage people to vote for or against it. I would imagine that even inside the U.D.P., there will be people who will be people who are against going to the ICJ. As I recall, there have always been one or two people.”

Why Should we go to court. We have independence more over we are living good and we have nothing to WIN only LOOSE…d day of tommorrow we will awake and be singing the Guatmelan National Anthem…think BELIZEANS vote no to the referendum to take it to courts we have nothing to win only to LOOSE
The moment we go to referendum or court for this issue, it will clearly show that we’re not sure about our Independence. We are a independent country, so why bother go to court with guatemala when we know that we can loose more than win. let them get it into their heads we stand as a nation not part of guatemala at any time. I don’t want our nation to go to court for this, we know our boundary lines, WTH does guatemala can’t understand.
