Slovakian fugitive wanted for murder is arrested in San Pedro
The high profile arrest of an international fugitive, nabbed in San Pedro last Wednesday, has left the Belize Police Department in a public relations debacle. While the local media has been asked to cooperate with the department in withholding information on the capture of forty-two year old Karol Mello, a Slovakian national who absconded toBelizein 2010, the Slovak Spectator, a weekly newspaper, has published details of his detention. Mello, who is reportedly a mafia boss in his home country, fled the Slovak Republic after being wanted for his involvement in a botched hit which resulted in the death of a woman and a minor in a village near the outskirts of the capital city. Since fleeing to Belize two years ago, Mello has been living on Ambergris Caye with his wife, a Slovak Actress and their recently born baby and is involved in the real estate business. He was apprehended by police following a tip-off by Interpol and on Thursday, Mello was whisked away to Belmopan where he was surrendered to Interpol officials.
According to Tibor Gaspar, president of Slovakia’s Police Corps, arrangements are being made to extradite the country’s most wanted outlaw by airlifting Mello in a government aircraft since he has escaped captivity twice within the last eight years. Mello also faces charges for his alleged participation in the murders of two men in 2003 and 2004, including the execution of mob boss Peter Congrady. He has been on the lam for the past two years after evading authorities in Slovak following his extradition from Poland. Locally, Police Press Officer, Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, today issued a release requesting support from various media houses in not publishing or broadcasting information on the arrest; but provided no justification for his request. Since the matter has already made international headlines News Five has opted to air the report.
I will watch to see if we can learn from the Slovaks how to prosecute and punish a killer.
How does murderers that are on Interpol most wanted list just waltz in the country right through the airport this is not possible without someone at the airport taking a bribe and we wonder why their are so many murders in the country someone or someone’s we’re paid off to let this guy pass through the airport the corruption of this gov. Is causing the murders of hundreds of belizeans wake up belizeans this pm and gov is killing us .
There we go again Storm with your typical, cruffy one track mind. The Slovak entered Belize legally. The Slovak has not violated any Belizean law. Thus he is entitled to a fair break here in Belize. When are you going to learn that not everything you read or hear is true. Gawd, the Americans really did a great job in messing up your head. You are such a goddam robot.
I will applaud loudly, if the Slovak uses his monies and successfully fights extradition. You should also do likewise because it means that our justice system is working. Hopefully Belize’s best, gets an opportunity to defend the Slovak. Belize’s best would Musa or Bradley.
This man is murder… He is responsabile directly or undirectly for death oh many people. He killed, bribed, threatened, stole… I hope the local authorities will cooperate with Slovak and he will end up in slovak prison for lifetime or he will burn in HELL.
@ Uncle Benji, Musa raped this Country, he should be in jail! On the other hand I do believe that Mello deserve a chance afterall it seems like he is trying to put his past behind and moves on. I am not sure that it is up to us to decide his faith. Whatever happens may God be his judge.
thanks to the members of the pup lawfirm musa and bradley criminals walk free in belize, way to go benji!!
about america,be greatfull of the help we dump in belize,a help belize dont deserve.
I don’t see what this story has to do with American justice.
I don’t see how it’s a victory for Belize or Belizean justice to have more international killers living among us. It’s already too dangerous here with homegrown killers. Let this man and all other fugitives hiding here go back where they came from and face the music, and let us be!
It is interesting how this guy’s presence in Belize can be tied to the current PM! How can we be objective when all we focus on is to demean the party/leaders that we have political differences with? I know that commonsense is not common but comeon, we can do better than this. There are a number of fugitives here in Belize and we all know that as time after time again they have been found here in Belize! Those who do not want to agree with that have their heads in the sand and their *** up in the air exposed! What we need to do is find a way of vetting these foreigners tyo see if they are of questionable character! And please, do not raise that PUP/UDP bull*** in this conversation.
And to the person who bibbles(sic) that he should hire the best to make that criminal stay in Belize, my heart goes out to you! Why? You are so misguided and frankly dull, that it boggles the mind. Blessed is he who has nothing worthy to say and gives us worthy evidence by keeping his mouth shut! Follow that.
.. enough said you babel BS shows your ignorance.
