10 year old boy remains comatose after his house fell on him

Brithon Cordova

Ten year old Brithon Cordova is tonight in a coma after his house collapsed on him at around nine a.m. on Thursday. Brithon along with his seven year old nephew, were playing with a puppy under their unstable zinc house, when it crashed on them. Neighbors pulled them from under the house an hour later and took them to the hospital, but Brithon was severely injured. His prognosis is grim, but the family is hopeful. Freelance reporter Duane Moody reports.

Ten year old Brithon Cordova remains in critical condition and is being closely monitored at the Intensive Care Unit of the K.H.M.H. In a freak accident on Thursday morning, he was seriously injured; Brithon is relying on a ventilator to assist him with breathing.

“He is not doing well. He has a broken bone on his neck, he has a punctured lungs; his stomach has a bruise and he is still not responding.”

Duane Moody

“I understand he is not breathing on his own.”

Norma Cordova

“He is not breathing on his own either.”

Brithon has been in a coma since the incident and his mother, Norma Cordova, says it is believed that he sustained brain damage.

Norma Cordova

“He had two blowouts—one look like something knocked him in his head and the other due to the fact that he was not breathing for a little while; that may affect his brains. He has brain damage.”

Duane Moody

“If he does come out of this coma and everything, what would be his prognosis? Would he be able to walk, would he be able to function as a normal kid?”

Norma Cordova

“Well we don’t know yet. Ih have to go step by step. After he comes out of the coma, then we will see what is next.”

Duane Moody

“But it is believed that he did get damage to his brain?”

Norma Cordova

“Yeah, yeah.”

The ten year old was trapped under his zinc house on San Martin Street in Orange Walk Town when it collapsed on him and his seven year old nephew, Jovuan Griffiths, who only received injuries on his legs. About an hour later, the two boys were rescued from under the house by residents in the area. Norma says she didn’t know that Brithon and Jovuan were under the house.

Norma Cordova

“We were lying down and we just hear the house started cracking and we just felt the impact. I didn’t know he was under the house. I guess he was playing with some puppies that we had under the house. And when I heard him scream—about two screams and then nothing—then I knew that he was under.  I was shock. It wasn’t a nice feeling.”

Duane Moody

“Did you think he was dead?”

Norma Cordova

“Yes! Yes! I didn’t hear him cry anymore, so I thought that he got smashed underneath the house.”

Duane Moody

“Your daughter said that when they took him from under the house he was blue.”

Norma Cordova

“He was blue; he was not breathing. His heartbeat was not there, his pulse was not there. They gave him a mouth to mouth respiration and when he went to the hospital, they massaged his heart; they pumped him and then they rushed him here.”

According to Norma, the doctors say that they will now wait forty-eight hours to see if there is any improvement so that they can assess the amount of brain damage Brithon sustained. Duane Moody for News Five.
