Shooting victim Sutherland lucky to be alive

Back to the violence, two men were injured in separate shootings over the weekend in Belize City, but were fortunate to survive. At around eight on Sunday night, twenty-three year old Dwayne Sutherland was targeted by two young men on bicycles, who opened fire at him at a party on Lacroix Boulevard. No one else was injured, but tonight Sutherland still has a bullet lodged in his right calf while a second shot penetrated and exited his left leg. He spoke to News Five from his hospital bed at the K.H.M.H.

“When I get shot last night I mi deh dah wah lee party and I gone fi wah cup a drink den I gone cross di street back. I gone een ah di yaad and when I look, I si two young bwai di ride pan bike den afterwards I deh dah di gate di stand up and when I gwein eena di yaad, I close di gate and afterwards I si dehn just start to shoot afta me.”

“And how many times were you hit?”

“Two times een ah my leg, two ah di leg dehn di left and di right.”

“These guys, you have any idea why they targeted you?”

“Me noh know why dehn do it, but dat noh mek sense fi dehn do and ih could ah mi kill anybody. Lot ah people mi deh round last night.”

“And did you recognize them? Are they from around the area or so, anybody you’ve seen before?”

“I know ah, ih dah from PIV. I neva expect dehn fi di go on like dat cause dah everybody weh know one another.”

“So will you be pursuing this matter in court? I know a lot of people these days get afraid for their lives.”

“I just want si ah and ask ah dah why ih do me dat. I noh really want got no problem.”
