B.D.F. soldier killed during early morning shooting

Wayne Madrill

While two cops are to be arraigned for murder, in the city, a B.D.F. corporal lost his life in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Corporal Wayne Madrill, who was also a band member, did not make it home from a party. The corporal was on Cemetery Road when someone opened fire; he was shot in the face and head and died on the spot. Police are following all leads but no one has been charged with murder of Wayne Madrill and it is believed he was not the intended target. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

Corporal Wayne Madrill was the second person to be killed in Belize City during the weekend. According to the police, the forty two year old B.D.F. soldier was gunned down on Sunday morning near the Auto Zone on Cemetery Road.

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“They saw the lifeless body of Wayne Madrill, forty-two years, member of the Belize Defence Force Band. He was seen lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds to the face and head. Initial investigation reveals that Madrill was walking on Cemetery Road in the company of another person when they heard several shots. The other person escaped unhurt, but Madrill died on the spot.

The career B.D.F. soldier has one daughter and two step sons.  According to Elena Montes, his common law wife for eleven years, she didn’t know he had left the house while she was sleeping.

“What he was doing out the night, I really can’t say; but he left the house. Apparently he went to withdraw a little money from the bank. And he was on his way back; the only thing he left the house unknown to me.”

“When you got the call, what time did that happen more or less that he was shot?”

Elena Montes

“Well I live here on Pen Road and I think I heard those gunshots. I head the first gunshot; it wasn’t heavy. And that’s when I woke up and I heard three more blasts and when I turn around to look for my phone for the time. And then I remember the clock is over on the wall in the bedroom and that’s when I look and the clock says twenty-five to three. And that’s when I realized that he wasn’t in the house.”

Friends say Montes stopped by a party and was walking home on Cemetery Road when he was killed. The police say he was not the target.

“Our investigators have established that he was not the intended target and we have the other person in custody and hopefully by interviewing that person we would be able to establish what’s the motive behind the murder.”

Elena Montes

“The police; we hope that they can solve the murder. And you know, we appeal to them to try and stop the violence. That’s about all that we can say.”

Madrill loved music and he played with the B.D.F. band in most official ceremonies. The band will play on in his memory at his funeral. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

How long will this carnage continue in Bze b4 the officials get off their high horses and do something to resolve this pressing issue. Bze has now officially become a battlefield; therefore adequate punishments need to be handed down to these culprits who are engaging in these heinous acts of violence. I hope that with the death of this police in the line of duty, whould shed some light on the urgent need to amend the laws so that we can start getting some of these carreer criminals off the streets for good. The law of the land should be that after three strikes, you should be sent away for a very long time, and you should pay your debt to society by doing hard labour because the country needs a lot of work to be done. No more free ride for these crminals in jail, we need to let them know that there is a price to be paid for their bad deeds and that jail is not a recreational center, it is a place that should be feared. This is the only way that we can curb these bad behaviours and save those who are contemplating living the lifestyle of a criminal, because if we don’t then Bze is just rearing an entire generation of killers, which will be a total disaster for the economy, and the country on a whole. We need investigative journalists in the jewel who can hold our elected officials feet to the fire, so that we can start seeing some movement in the right direction. There are so many stories to be had in bze and noone is doing society a service by doing basic follow ups, e.g the missing guns, the passport scandal, corrupt politicians, rouge cops, unsolve murders, just to mention a few.

Belize City has become a city filled with corruption and murderers. What is the Belize Government doing? How about the parents and guardians? Where are the original Belize values? There are no excuses for such ruthless and immoral behavior. Has so many especially young Belizeans lost their way? I am sick of hearing about murders on a very regular basis from a very small country like Belize. How can you attract educated Belizeans to remain in a country that is out of control?
