That’s a great question. Belize is in jeopardy for its existence, no matter what happens with the ICJ.
If we do not CLOSE the borders, it is only a matter of time before gradual illegal immigration overwhelms our little band of Belizean brothers, and we wake up one day with a Guat majority. Guatemala outnumbers Belize almost 50:1, just 2% of their population will outnumber natural born Belizeans.
The danger is not an armed invasion, because the stealth invasion has been underway for years and it continues unchecked. History is full of warning examples — ask the original Americans about the stealth invasion of Europeans, or any of the European countries today about the change throughout Europe from unchecked cheap labor flowing in from Muslim countries. For goodness sake, the most common name for newborn boys in London today is Mohammed! Experts predict France will be a majority Muslim nation in less than 40 years from today.
Unless ICJ is going to arm our border communities and train them to patrol their own territories, then it will do nothing to save the Jewel over time. IT’S OUR NATION, AND WE MUST DEFEND ITS BORDERS OURSELVES.
No, it won’t and that’s simply because this concept of “Belice es Nuestro!” has become a key part of the Guatemalan identity through indoctrination and manipulation on the part of the selfish and highly racist White Guatemalan oligarchy. Thus, the only way to break that ideology and force the Guats to come to the table to resolve this issue is by building up our population the correct way and by maintaining a large enough military force that would make it impossible for the Guats to rape Belize.
ICJ will not stop Guatemalan incursion even if we win the case. This is just a bunch of paper and words thrown out there that the people on the ground doesn’t c are or understand.
Guatemala will have to put its resources and act together to stop it but its not affecting them so why waste the resources. Instead, this incursion is providing jobs to their economy.
Belize doesn’t have the human, technology, nor the financial capital to monitor that rugged terrain. This does impact us.
So, how do we go about doing this???? Perhaps, at the macro level OAS (mediator) and the ICJ (the juror) should lay the stick on Guatemala to fully collaborate on this matter. Environmental NGOs local and International should put pressure.
Any more ideas????
No that will not prevent any Guatemalans from entering our country, Prensa Libre likes to talk bad of Belize but many Guatemalans come to Belize to quench their hunger. I believe that we have to put more Forest rangers better armed. arrest and process them in our democratic courts. I invite all Belizeans to stop going to Melchor to buy to show them that we mean business.
Belize needs military aid, Indy; it’s the only realistic way we can be able to build up the manpower necessary to defend its sovereignty.
How can we stop them from thinking of coming when their constitution says Belize is a district of Guatemala?
of course it will not due to many reasons. Belizean politicians alike are to blame too, both parties engaged on mass nationalizations of foreigners for political gain and that in a sense is giving away the country. You just can’t blame poor Guatemalans from crossing the border to do illegal subsistence logging and farming when it is widely known that both political parties will grant them naturalization papers in order to win an election.
Stop selling the country first and then complain and take steps to stop illegal incursions.
My idea is for every one of our border villages to have a small local defense force trained and equipped by the BDF, Britain, or someone like that. The people who live in these remote areas are too vulnerable to border incursions even now, and they have the incentive to protect themselves.
Then there needs to be the means of rapid response by BDF if the village forces encounter problems.
I can’t think of any better cost-effective way to protect our border, and if we do not do that, we will become a department of Guatemala during my lifetime, without armed invasion, and no matter what ICJ says. And I’m a grandfather!
This will not stop Guatemalan. Why go to ICJ? In fact Belize is ours we just need to defend it. We know our borders quite well as a independent country. Guatemala Will have to start to respect our border and put more Security out there and use justifiable force when ours borders is abused or trespass by Guatemalan. Let us show Guatemala what we are capable of doing and show them this is our Land. We celebrate our Independence day and send Guatemala the message this time.
Will not go to ICJ.
All Belizean should have the right to bear arms like we do in Texas. The young people have to take control of the country and get rid of the old people in power that are stealing everything from you. You can only depend on yourself. It is up to you to say who will come across your border. I say kill everything that tries to take your country from you.
