Pike, 18 year old, murdered several feet from his home
In the Old Capital, there have been four murders in the past four nights. B.D.F. Corporal Wayne Madrill and Stephen Flowers were killed over the weekend and on Monday night two more residents fell victim to the uncontrollable street violence. We start with the homicide of Kendis Pike, who like B.D.F. Corporal Madrill, was gunned down for no apparent reason in close proximity of his house. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

Kendis Pike is the most recent person to be added to the murder statistic. The eighteen year old youth was walking home when he was shot at the corner of Kraal Road and Benbow Street on Monday night. A lone gunman shot him to the left side of the chest and his left hand.
“Last night what happened? Where was he coming from?”
Roma Pike, Mother of Kendis Pike
“Well ih mi di come home. I hear the shot and I wake up when I heard gunshot. And the area weh I live ina, you know I wake up. And then two minutes after, I noh see no movements so I come back come lay down and then the neighbor knock pan di door and tell me mi son deh out dehn and dah right deh I deal with it.”
Jose Sanchez
“There was no hope for him that’s where he died. So he died just a couple houses away from here?”
Roma Pike
“Yah, couple house from home.”
Jose Sanchez
“Now the question everybody would want to know: why would anyone want to harm your son?”
“Well you see, the realness bout it; my son dead. Out yah dah wah chancy world; out yah dah weh the beast live ina people. And I always tell him bout the street at night, but sometimes he feel free; because he dah wah nice person, he noh do nobody nothing. We always di plead the blood of Jesus ova one another. We ask God fi guide us in our going out and coming in and maybe he feel like dende just protect h; but verb, you have the action. Noh flow the street late da night.”
He lived at number two Benbow Street, and only had to walk past this parked car to the zinc fence and he would have been safe at home. His mother says there are lessons to be learned for other youths.
“What I can say to people now because my son done dead and gone; what I could say to the youth dehn now because I noh like TV and camera, but the father tell me give the message make dehn know because the beast deh out yah and dah people amongst people, And if you study things, you wah know weh di go on. I learn now and I could tell people. Study things and if find any spirit weh noh right, you have to get rid ah di people; no entertain them. Youth; listen to unu parents, noh only respect but obey. Obey too cause if yoh parents tell yo noh go certain hours—and nowadays on the street after ten, nothing deh out deh. Dah di beast dehn deh out; the stalker dehn—dehn alive, dehn living, dehn live amongst wi. Dehn deh right amongst wi. Dehn envy, dehn jealous, dehn malicious; dehn got bad mind; dehn noh happy; dehn can’t sleep at night and dende dah the lurking beast weh deh bout di take innocent life.”
The family doesn’t expect that any motive for Kendis’ murder will ever be established since they believe the streets are populated with people who lack any regard for universal human values. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.
His body was transported to the K.H.M.H. where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.
Poor Mother Kendis — but she spoke a lot of truth. I hope some other mothers will get that message through to their sons before they learn the hard way.
