P.U.P. contacted by bondholders

The Superbond restructuring is being widely discussed, both locally and internationally, but for the Opposition the talk is about their dissatisfaction over a lack of communication from government. P.U.P. leader, Francis Fonseca, feels that as parliamentarians, the elected members of the Opposition should be involved or at least be kept updated on the process. While the government prepares to meet with bondholders in September, Fonseca says that they have been contacted by bondholders and international journalists who are inquiring about the restructuring. Fonseca says he finds it petty that G.O.B. has taken the view that if the P.U.P. was involved, it would want to take credit for the success in re-negotiating the debt.  Nonetheless, the Opposition supports the move to restructure the Superbond, which Fonseca agrees has become necessary for future economic growth.

Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition

Francis Fonseca

“We have not been briefed by the government on this matter; they have not shared with us any official information. You know but having said that, our position we believe, as a responsible opposition, is to act in good faith on this issue. We believe it is an absolutely critical issue for Belize’s development and Belize’s future. So our position is very clear; we want the bond renegotiation exercise to succeed and whatever we can do as an opposition to assist in that regard, we are prepared to do.”

Marleni Cuellar

“Do you feel that it was because of the level that their working and obviously the speed and urgency of getting the bond re-negotiated, do you think that it was necessary for everybody to be included at this point in time?”

Francis Fonseca

“I understand and appreciate that this is a matter that requires a great deal of sensitivity, if you like, when you’re negotiating; you have to be careful what you say and to whom you say what you say. So I appreciate that but I think on an issue of this level of national importance, it’s absolutely important for all of us to be talking from the same hymn sheet. It’s not about Francis Fonseca having all the information; it’s about me being able to share that information with the supporters and the members of the People’s United Party, who as I said, represent half of the country, who need to be properly educated and informed on the facts, the true facts in terms of the Superbond and why the particular decision was taken not to make the coupon payment and what are the implications, what are the consequences that will flow from that decision.”

Let’s not be silly. The PUPs must be consulted in parliament about all laws and procedures and other activities taken and to be taken by the government. If they are not ,or won’t be consulted, then they must just pack up , leave and never return. let barrow rule until we change the government and then the PUPs can do the same to the UDPs.

  2. busha says:

bs, if the PUP were in power they would’nt get the UDP involved eigther…

Ronald Reagan said something like, “You’d be surprised how much you can achieve if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

Our “leaders” seem to pursue exactly an opposite philosophy, and achieve . . . NOTHING. There’s not a single statesman in Belmopan.

this are the words of a leader that is heading the same wrong path like the others. read what he says and he clearly set himself trying to create a separation on the population by party. it would be different if he would say “the pup will try to educate the whole population of this country as what is the bla bla bla bla.” showing interest in the counrty and not only his party fanatics.
some wise words for you mr. fonseca if you plan to win more political followers learn to gain them by wise words not the way you talk it cause a different effect on the publics eye.
overall your intentions are good to inform but not that way.
