Caves Branch rappelling platform is much ado about nothing

The construction of a rappelling platform atop Cave Three at Nohoch Che’en has been a hot-button issue among tourism stakeholders since it was first discovered that work was being done on the face of the adjoining hill.  On Monday, the Federation of Cruise Tourism Association of Belize held a press conference during which it strongly criticized the National Institute of Culture and History for granting Chukka permission to build the iron deck.  Among the concerns raised is the safety hazard that the suspended platform poses to the many cave-tubers, who traverse the waters below.  While Chukka has responded to allegations made by FECTAB’s president Tom Greenwood, NICH chose to remain silent until today.  According to the memo, FECTAB failed to mention that a meeting was held last Thursday during which the matter was discussed with all industry stakeholders.  It also states that the erection of the rappelling platform was done according to universal standards set by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation.  Furthermore, the causeway leading to the Crystal Cave Annex was built as a response to safety and conservation concerns in the cave.  NICH also cites that similar boardwalks have been constructed at Rio Frio, St. Herman’s and at Checehem Ha caves.

I don’t know what poor Tom Greenwood has done to be downtodden in such a manner. Tom has always been someone I admired. He was the best radio voice over at Radio Belize (preferences were given to others). He was the best BVG (Belzie Volunteer Guards) commander; yet when BDF was formed, he was left out. Eventually, as part of BDF he commenced climbing fast and then crashed. Now FECTAB is a disaster.

What’s wrong with Belize? Why do we destroy our talented people? Please give me an answer. I will sit back and read every one of your answers. Why do we destroy our talented people? Uncle Benji’s family was forced to seek political asylum in Guatemala. Why do we destroy our talented people?

Most agree, I’ve worked with Tom some time ago and he’s a real fighter for justice. I’ve seen him stand up and talk when everyone else sit quietly. I believe he has been worn down over the years, fighting so many battles and winning few…lost many due to politics getting involved, but he always fight for what he believes is right…which most of the time are my beliefs too. I think he’s upset because if FECTAB had requested permission to do exactly what Chukka did, tthey would have given them the run around and eventually tell them no. DID the Dept of Environment (DOE) give clearance? Was Forestry involved? Which authority gave the green light? get those questiones answered and you’ll see why FECTAB is irrate….
