Natives are restless in Pickstock Jungle without water

The Jungle is an impoverished Pickstock Street community that has been without water for days. Most of the residents depend on free water from a pipe stand that was blocked on Friday by the Belize Water Services Limited. It is creating havoc for the families especially since the children are now back in school. We aired the plight of the residents on Tuesday night and today, there has been swift reaction.  A letter from the PUP Fort George Division says that the pipe was installed for residents from when the late George Price was Prime Minister. It says, “There are and have been for many years, several stand pipes serving the disadvantaged areas of Belize… Last Friday BWSL took the arbitrary and misguided action to cut off the water supply from the stand pipe in the Pickstock Apartment.” According to the area rep, Said Musa, the heartless decision should immediately be reversed. And though News Five made several attempts on Tuesday to reach the decision makers at BWSL, no one would address the concern. However, today, BWSL says that the disconnection was as a result of a direct request from the Ministry of Finance for a temporary disconnection to make repairs because excessive leakage had resulted bills surpassing three thousand dollars a month. BWSL apologized to the residents via a press release and says it intends to replace the pipe shortly. News Five visited the Jungle after four this evening but the residents were still waiting for water.

Celia Nicholas, Resident of Pickstock Jungle

“This morning about after ten; minutes to eleven, one person come, Stevie Bugman—that dah how I know the young man as—ih dah wah supervisor ih say. Ih say they have a leakage at the corner of the lane and as soon as they done fix that, they will come and reconnect the pipe. They just want to build something sten so that the pipe noh easy fi bruk again; by this evening they will put it back.”

Jose Sanchez

“So, they’re finished with their leak?”

Celia Nicholas

Celia Nicholas

“From before twelve o’clock; from before twelve o’clock dehn finish and dehn can’t come yet.”

Jose Sanchez

“Now let me ask; you had no water; all these twenty-eight families had no water, how were you able to bathe your kids?”

Celia Nicholas

“Right now we di pay fifty cents a bucket fi water from the neighbors dehn weh have water; that’s all weh we have to do. We have to buy water from people. And some of the neighbors go on bad. Just now my auntie mi need water and she had to go beg for some water to drink ih pills. See ih still got di pills dehn right deh.”

Jose Sanchez

“But any official information coming from the water services limited?”

Celia Nicholas

“Just what the young man told me. And one of my friends called me and tell me that dehn noh wah put back the water in a hurry; noh care weh we do, dehn noh wah put the water in a hurry. So we fi make fi we pickney dehn suffer. Some of the people yah can’t even feed dehn pickney some days. You think dah joke fi buy wah bucket ah water for fifty cents. Some days you need ten buckets a water ina yoh house. How when you need fi wash? You know how much people noh wash from Friday.”

News Five spoke to Nicholas who says that at five thirty this evening, BWSL workers were attempting to repair the pipe. Just now, we have been told that the water has been reconnected.

  3. Gary says:

Why do they deserve to stay at home all day on their lazy @$$#$ and still get FREE water when I have to go to work everyday to barely make the payments for my bills…..is this what we get for trying to be productive citizens in this country…….

  4. User98 says:

    Goddamn swarthys!

  5. Simone says:

All they do is make more babies, leave the water on, thief and make noise-go work, apply to BWS for your own water and then pay the bill and you will have water

  6. unfair says:

It is sad what is happening to the kids, who don’t deserve this.

We are in a country were the gang member get paid, the lazy people don’t work and get paid their utility bills by the government. Yet the working and productive Belizean have to work hard to bare make it for the beans. Where else in this country can you get this privileges, paid for doing the wrong thing.

What a country we live in.

  7. Creole says:

i wonder if they still have the milk pan cups the Hon. George Price told them to drink out of back in the day. The water is being wasted cause its free. same way yo come up with 50cents fu buy water by the bucket, maybe, use some common sense and protect the only free water source you have. Have some pride, keep the area clean and maybe, just maybe some neighbors might help out.
    just my 2 cents.

  8. Earl Grey says:

We are JUDGED… BY HOW WE TREAT THOSE WE CONSIDER THE LEAST AMONG US!!!

  9. deedee says:

Instead of Said Musa writing letters on behalf of the residents of pickstock to access free water, he should use his influence & write to his colleagues etc asking them to give these people JOBS.

  10. Al says:

As far as I am concerned, when a woman makes a decision to have sex she knows that the possibility exist that babies can come from this, yet they do it over and over again, knowing that they cannot afford these children. The governent did not lay with them and impregnate them, so why should the government be responsible to take care of them, this was their personal deciison. Now, if there were situation where the parents were sick, crippled or some other sound reason why they are unable to provide, I have no problem them getting some help. I have a problem with ignorant, lazy people using these poor babies who did not asked to be born as pawn for free handout, while others have to work hard to stay alive.

  11. ceo says:

Then why not fix the pipe and stop the leak instead of cutting off the water?

Another bone-head move that is very short sighted! When there is not enough water there could be out breaks of diseases and PUP like UDP we will all get sick!

  12. ceo says:

I am sure most if not all of those who just spoke ill of those that are in need are christians and may have at some time read in the bible where it says…’when I was hungry you fed me not….when I was in prison….when I sick….Remember that? Well this ends by saying that what ever you do onto the least of these you did it unto me…The poor will be ever present!

  13. Ixchel Pop says:

There is no real poverty in Belize- there is always the expectation that someone will give you what you need- Price and Musa being very guilty of promoting this behavior as there is the general belief that it leads to votes come election day. Barrow et el inherited this legacy and to some extent has continue to do the same.

So my two cents is leave the water off…let them get job and regularize the process for getting water piped to their homes. Look at the recent stats, it is the immigrants who are working; Belizeans dont want to work…they want to be given stuff…look and see what has been the results of this…who are the ones in jail? what are they in there for? from which part of the country are they from? Go figure.

  14. Phillybelizean says:

I so agree wt@al,big long tone man sitting around doin $#!%,look at that place bush all around,$#!% those rural villages look better that there when snake bite them then smh!! By the way what uncle benji have to say

  15. jay says:

The practice of buying votes created this vicious cycle of dependency, laziness and poverty. Now the politicians are trying to stop the gravy train. Good luck with that!

  16. Truth says:

Turn the pipe on for 3 months. That should me more than enough time for 28 families to get on their feet! No reason why for at least a decade these people have not gotten a chance to put water in! this is past laziness and ridiculousness! The water has already been put back in since yesterday. the PM needs to make the stand now n say enough is enough!

  17. pieces says:

CEO YES THE BIBLE DO SAY THAT, BUT IT ALSO SAYS
    ” A MAN THAT DOESN’T WORK SHOULDN’T EAT” AND
“A PERSON WITHOUT SELF CONTROL IS LIKE A CITY WITH OUT WALLS” PROVERBS 25:28″ AND
” PROVERBS 19:19 IF YOU RESCUE A SHORT TEMPERED PERSON ONCE YOU WILL HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN”
HOW MUCH SINGLE MOTHERS ARE OUT HERE WORKING AT BML TO MAKE SURE THEIR CHILDREN HAVE WHAT THEY NEED IN LIFE?
MISS PLEASE TELL YOUR BOYFRIEND THAT LIVES WITH YOU, THE KIDS CAN’T SURVIVE ON SEX , TELL HIM FREE SEX DONE N GO GET A JOB.
P.S I NO DAT DA UR BUSINESS, BUT WEN U GET PAN TV N SEY ALL UR BUSINESS DEN U GIVE EVERYBODY RITE FI DIP INA UR LIFE…….

  18. Rod says:

Hip hip hurray for the udp they believe in killing people anyway so this is nothing new they are accomplices to all the murders going on in the outcry any way so why not kill some more children by not giving them wata. Hip hip hurray fu judas barrow . Like I said unu go tha barrow house he no pay fu wata and he got plenty go get some tha fu he house.

  19. Ali B says:

What needs to get done is rationing of the water. these people can make many children but they think the water comes free. BWSL not stopping them from catching rain water or walking to the river and get water, yet they can have TV and buy drugs…I am sorry for them but sometimes they too careless too, for every gallon of water they waste or use, we tax payers pay for it. I’ve seen these pipe left running and no one bothers to try and turn it off. now they screaming foul. BWSL should say …X amount of gallons per family/person per month…if you waste it before the end of the month then you’ll simply have to wait until the beginning of the next month… Nothing is free these days…

  20. Sw@gville says:

Let those lazy people apply for their own water, they get free water and the jungle kids break up the stand pipes and let the water waste a lot. I think they should start charging a monthly fee to get water from that pipe. It is sad that the government spoil those people, they might can’t afford to pay for water, but let Vybez Kartel come to do a concert they go to buy a new outfit and drink all night. They are all full of Siht.
