Driven to a hit, murder in Libertad

A Corozal taxi driver was killed, execution style, early on Tuesday night. It is believed that the two men, who chartered Anwar Hernandez to take them to Libertad, carried out the heinous crime. Witnesses say they heard multiple gunshots and Hernandez pleading for help but were too scared to go to his aid. His eight month pregnant wife told Duane Moody that she saw him hours before his murder.

It is a murder that investigators say appears be a properly executed hit that took the life of twenty-eight year old Anwar Hernandez. The bloodstains in his maroon Mitsubishi Gallant are the telltale signs of the execution style murder of Hernandez. He was hit twelve times: seven shots to the right side of the back, four times to the right arm and once behind the right ear that exited the cheek. Hernandez was lured to his death when he was chartered for a fare to Libertad.

“We heard the gun, it was like twelve shots. We knew that something was happening in the village. When we went out there, we saw a multitude of people and we saw that a guy was shot. We are afraid to go because with lot of crime that was happening in Belize. The guy was crying, help help, but do you think we will come out and give help and we hear gun. When you hear gun that is something bad that is happening; crime so we can’t go and help because we can get one too.”

It is believed that the gunman and another person were travelling in Hernandez’s taxi. They fled in a getaway vehicle, a rodeo, which then sped off into the direction of Corozal Town. But who wanted Hernandez dead? His wife, Carmen, who is eight months pregnant with his second child, a baby girl, says she is clueless.

“No like I tell you before he was a friendly person. He was a kindly person; everybody knows him. He used to be very friendly with everybody; that’s all I could say.”

“I saw him yesterday about five-thirty when we were coming up to Santa Rita, he was coming down from Chetumal; we meet on the road. That is the last time I saw him with his car.”
Little did she know that it would be the last she would see her husband. Authorities say that evidence and information gathered so far have revealed that Hernandez’s brutal killing is drug connected. Carmen says what she will remember the most about Anwar.

“That he used to play with his son; he was desperately in knowing this baby because it’s a girl and he wanted this baby girl; he wanted her very much.”
And while the murder has stunned the villagers, they say that there has been an increase in criminal activity in the village.

“Here in Libertad, a lot of things is happening, lots of stealing and we need our police station. When we need assistance of police, we don’t have any assistance of police. and we have Concepcion, we have Estrella, we have Santa Cruz and Libertad. And Libertad is a hideout for the gangs that come from Belize City and they come here in our village. It’s not the first time; it usually happens: a lot of fighting, stealing of bicycles, robberies in house…”

“Well murder like this, no. Like this weh happen, no. But we need the assistance of that police station.”
Several persons are currently detained. Newly instated Deputy Officer Commanding Corozal Police, Assistant Superintendent Daniel Arzu, says that the department is optimistic that there will be closure to the investigation. Duane Moody for News Five.
It is tenth murder so far in the Corozal District, which doubles the number for last year.

Whoever did it, and for whatever reason, catch him. If he survives the arrest, hang him. After a fair and impartial conviction, of course.
We need to pull out of the Caribbean Court of Justice for criminal appeals. That bench is just a last resort to set killers free because they don’t believe in harsh punishment, and they don’t live in the Jewel where criminals hurt and murder so many people. If they want to judge us, they must live here among us.
Very seriously, if I were a cab owner, I would have a surveillance camera in my car running at all times. Maybe it would be taken by a criminal, maybe not, but it is better than nothing.

Criminals cannot kill everyone in this country if we stand together, so it’s about time to stop crime.

it doesnt matter why this happened.. no one deserves to die this way. If a husband was mad he could have divorced the cheating wife. And police always link everything to drugs like in a way to say that the victim deserved it. I mean which police? all we have are lazy men who dont like hard work so they sign up for policemen, there are a few tho that do their job right but most of them dont.
