Opposition rails up with Godwin Hulse

Francis Fonseca

Although the talk at the House was strictly about sugar, all was not sweet. The Opposition took a few aimed shots at Minister of Immigration Godwin Hulse for his remarks about the B.S.I. sale to ASR. Hulse, who is also a farmer, was appointed to the B.S.I. Board before his ministerial appointment and has remained a member. Leader of the Opposition Francis Fonseca and former Prime Minister Said Musa both chided him for not keeping his focus on recent irregularities at the Immigration Department.

Francis Fonseca, Leader of Opposition

“The nonsense that Godwin Hulse has been spewing in media. Let me say this; I have to say this Mister Speaker, when I saw Mister Hulse on the news, I thought this man was on the news last night to talk about how some terrorist had gotten hold of a passport, only to hear him talking about the sugar industry. Ever since he opened his mouth and sunk the Mello case with his misinformation and mis-talk, he has been in hiding. So I thought that this is what he was there to talk about last night—to address the issue of what is happening in the Immigration Department under his watch. But instead he was there to talk about the sugar industry. And as the member of Fort George has pointed out very clearly, we know why he is so quick to jump on the media to talk about the sugar industry.”

Said Musa

Said Musa, Area Representative, Fort George

“And he uttering words to the effect that all the cane farmers need to do is get on with the business, cut unu cane and stop the foolishness—words to that effect. In other words, he was being patronizing to the six thousand cane farmers of this country—insulting those people simply because he wanted to carry a brief for American Sugar Refinery and B.S.I.”

Hulse could not reply at today’s sitting because only elected representatives attend House meetings.

Why can’t these things that require legislation be done openly, and let other qualified companies compete with proposals for them? That is always the way to get the best deal for the people of the country. But maybe that wasn’t the object of this dirty backroom deal.
