He threw rum then a cement block at his victim

Kareem Flowers

A bar fight that got out of hand has resulted in charges against Supal Street resident, thirty-six year old Kareem Flowers. He was taken to the Belize City Magistrates Court today and charged with Wounding upon Honduran national, Jairo Sanchez. Reports are that on Sunday both men were at Riverside Bar when Flowers threw a rum bottle at Sanchez, but missed. Sanchez says Flowers then threw a piece of cement at his face, but he blocked it with his right hand, which was injured.  He had to seek medical attention and requested court action, leading police to arrest Flowers, who wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the charge. Knowing that he has similar offences on his rap sheet, Flowers begged the court for leniency and asked to be given a non-custodial sentence.  Since he has no previous convictions for the charge of Wounding, the magistrate fined him eight hundred dollars to be paid by December fifteenth, or he will spend a year in prison.

    Demon rum at work again.

I wish we had an effective and mandatory alcohol treatment hospital for people like this, who could be forced by the court to sober up and get treated before being released.

Almost every day in the news we see stories of lives being traumatized or lost because of drunken behavior. Too sad.
