Guatemalan National steals identity of Belizean living in Chicago

Carlos Mauricio Rossal Perez

There was another case of theft before the courts today; but this time it’s identity theft. Sixty-one year old Carlos Mauricio Rossal Perez is a Guatemalan national from the Sapaka area, who was picked up by Immigration personnel today. In his possession were a Belizean passport, birth certificate, social security card, voter’s ID, border’s permit and driver’s license; all belonging to Naim Matar of Orange Walk. It turns out that for more than twenty-four days Perez has been living in Belize and pretending to be Matar. But the jig is up and he has been charged with five criminal offences; one count is for false representation and the other four are for using Matar’s Social Security card, passport, birth certificate and border permit.  According to Immigration personnel, they first came in contact with Perez at their Belize City office on October first when he attempted to renew Matar’s passport, which expired October nineteenth. Perez paid the fifty dollar fee, but when he returned to pick up the passport, he was told he would have to come back and the application was forwarded for investigation. The first clue was that Perez told authorities he was an only child, but the Vital Statistics Department confirmed that Matar has two brothers and one sister. It also turns out that the real Naim Matar is presently residing in Chicago, USA. Perez did not return to the Immigration Office, but he was arrested near the Western Border where he admitted that he was not Matar and showed the Immigration officers his Guatemalan passport and driver’s license which are both expired. In court today he pleaded guilty to all charges and was fined a total of ten thousand, five hundred dollars to be paid immediately. Since he was unable to make payment, he will spend two years in prison.
