Ladyville residents in foul mood over piggery

Story PictureIt’s a recurring story in all parts of the country, where, with precious few exceptions, the notion of zoning is an unknown concept. This time the place is Ladyville and the nuisance is a neighbourhood piggery.

Norman Crawford, Area resident
“First thing in the morning you smell the pig. Last thing at night you smell the pig. It is not right for you to raise pigs in a residential area.”

Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
It is not only poor road conditions that have these residents of Ladyville upset but according to the families who live on Compassion Lane, it is a herd of pigs being raised in the neighbourhood that have created an unhealthy environment.

Norman Crawford
“I think that a pig pen or a pig farm should not be so close amongst people, human beings. Something like that should be far away like an isolated place where nobody lives but pigs, I mean, come on.”

Judith Kerr, Area Resident
“You cannot sit down back here because it is blowing right here. That is why I don’t like come out here.”

Alice Vargas, Area Resident
“The stench is very strong. Every morning when you wake up you don’t catch any breeze you catch lone stinkiness. The kids them, I don’t know, every minute they sick and I don’t know if it is from that or what. But we tell them about it and he said he would move them but I don’t know when, because quite a while we telling them now about it.”

Miguel Alberto, Area Resident
“Of course it is not right. I am from city; I wasn’t born here I was born from good city and then the law has to know what you are doing with these things here. They are taking too long too.”

Judith Kerr
“Every morning I bring my son to school and it smell stink. As you wake up you smell it in your house and the breeze blow the scent right there. You have to stay lock up and put on fan every day.”

We did approach the neighbour next door but the young woman told us we would need to speak to her husband and he was not home. She did tell us that they plan to move out of the area but that it would take time for them to relocate.

Jacqueline Godwin
“And how long have you guys been living under these conditions?”

Norman Crawford
“About eight to nine months now, and that is a long time.”

Jacqueline Godwin
“And the Health Department hasn’t gotten back in touch with you guys since they visited?”

Norman Crawford
“Never. They came one day and they said that the pigs had to go because it was not right and from that day I didn’t see them anymore. Because I could get the other way and just eliminate these pigs but I want to go through the right channel first. I want to go through the right procedure. I want the Ministry of Health to do something about these pigs that are affecting my niece and nephew that live around this area. Right now I have the pig flu, that’s a new sickness the pig flu. First thing at morning and last thing at night you smell pig.”

Judith Kerr
“And when you walk in the water it gives you itch because of the germs. Sometime my foot gets pink and I can’t even walk because it itches.”

The Ladyville residents are appealing to the authorities to address the problem as quickly as possible.
