Alleged gunman denied bail on attempted murder charge

Ellis Meighan Jr.

The suspect in the early morning shooting of Youth for the Future employee, Delone Vernon, remains imprisoned tonight after he attempted to secure bail at the Supreme Court. Twenty year old Ellis Meighan Junior is charged with Attempted Murder, conspiracy to Commit Murder, Grievous Harm and Use of Deadly Means of Harm. The crown, represented by Christophe Rodriguez, presented affidavits from witnesses, including Vernon, to show that they have a solid case against Meighan. One of the statements was from a police officer, who says that he cautioned Meighan on October sixteenth, when he was initially charged and the accused man made threats to the victim and his family, saying that he would kill them all. That was enough to convince Justice Herbert Lord to reject the bail application and he was returned to the Central Prison. Vernon was shot shortly before six a.m. on October twelfth, whilst walking on Ebony Street en route to work. He says, he was approached by two men and recognized Meighan, who was armed with a handgun. Meighan allegedly fired several shots, hitting Vernon in the abdomen, lower back and right leg. He was assisted by a passing taxi driver, who took him to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Police found eight expended shells and one slug at the scene.
