Shooting interrupts Culture Capital Celebration
As Villafranco grieves the loss of her common-law-husband, hours later two others were injured in a shooting in Dangriga. The victims are a female bystander and a man who was shot by police during a celebration at the B.T.L. Park. It started when Eugene Thompson was reportedly approached by Derrick Gorosica who was armed with a prohibited firearm. In the altercation, several shots were fired as Thompson tried to wrestle away the weapon and the woman was accidentally shot. Police Press Officer, Raphael Martinez, says a cop then shot Gorosica to subdue him.
Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer
“There was a shooting in Dangriga on the nineteenth of November as well. At approximately five-thirty p.m., Dangriga police responded to shots being fired at the B.T.L. in front of Dangriga Town Council, where upon arrival, two male persons were seen engaging in a struggle for a black pistol. As a result, police shot one of the persons, namely Derrick Gorosica, twenty-three years old of number two New Site Area Dangriga. He was shot in the upper leg near the hip. The other male person, Eugene Thompson, a Belizean artist of Benguche area Dangriga, reported that while socializing at the park, he was approached by Gorosica who pulled out what appeared to be a black nine millimeter pistol from his pants waist and pointed it at him, firing a single shot in his direction but missed. Thompson then grabbed hold of the gun and during their approximately ten minute struggle, allegedly two more shots were fired but missed. The park was occupied by other people socializing and one Rosalie Simon, a housewife of Isla Road Dangriga Town was shot in the upper center of her back. She was treated and released from the hospital. Thompson did not sustain any injuries and Gorosica was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment. Police have since retrieved two point four-five caliber expended shells from the scene, one black Norinco brand point four-five caliber pistol, one magazine and five live rounds of point four-five caliber and of course have detained Derrick Gorosica.”
While Martinez provides Dangriga addresses for Gorosica and Thompson, Dangriga police say the men are from Belize City.
I wonder where these guys got their .45 caliber ammo??
Accoding to Jeffries yesterday, by curbing the legal importation of ammunition we can cut down on crime….
perhaps they got their ammo from the same guy that the criminals got their .40 caliber ammo when they shot the police officer in the Belama substation….
Both .40 and .45 caliber are prohibited in Belize so no gun dealer can legally import them
to the country… so … mr. smart Jeffries… from where are these high caliber ammunitions coming (including .357 and the ammo for M16 and AK47 that were recently confiscated)???
Our biggest problems with crime…. 1) lawyers as government ministers and 2) high ranking police officers WITHOUT critical thinking capacity and simple common sense…..!!!
but again our the vast majority of our populace is so ignorant that we believe all the stupidity that these 2 groups of persons say…..
I 99% agree with Roska. There might be one high-ranking police official who can think.
The men are reported from Belize City — I suspect laying low in Dangriga until the police crackdown there passes over. That was the obvious problem with announcing a crackdown, and then waiting a week to gazette and implement it, the worst of the worst escaped to other towns that may not be equuipped to handle them.
