Shooting of Salvapan woman was allegedly an attempted hit
A Salvapan woman is admitted at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital tonight, recovering from three gunshot injuries. According to police, just before eight o’clock on Friday night, two masked men stormed into the Spain Street residence of twenty-five year old Cecilia Varela. The men fired shots at her, her husband who ran shouting for help as well as her brother. Both men escaped unharmed but Varela was shot twice on the legs and once on the left shoulder. She was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital and later transferred to Belize City. Two nine millimeter expended shells and a live round were recovered from outside the house and one slug was found in the living room. Police were also reportedly calling the incident a robbery attempt, but Varela’s sister called the media today to say that’s not so. She says the shooting was the third attempt on Varela’s life, but that their reports to police have been ignored. The woman also claims that a Belmopan woman hired the gunmen.
Voice Of: Sister of Cecilia Varela
“I am the young lady sister and I know that this was not a robbery. We try—this is the third time that they tried to kill my sister and the first time that my sister went to the station and she made a report, police didn’t want to get no report from her. Her husband went there and you know a corporal told him that he doesn’t have nothing to do there. So I want the public to know that this is not a robbery; they tried to kill my sister and this is the third time and I want the police department to hear that they have to arrest someone for this because we know who did it; the family knows that my sister noh have no enemy and we know that the two masked men that went to her house on Friday, they never went to rob, they went to kill her because someone paid them to go and kill her.”

“Did you pass on this information to the Police?”
Voice Of: Sister of Cecilia Varela
“Yes ma’am, the police have the information but ih look like this lady she buy the police them here in Belmopan because every time this happen, they neva want tend to my sister when she goes to the police station. The second time was with a hit and they neva did nothing about it. They arrest the lady; they had a fi a couple hours and she released yesterday again. The two masked men told my sister that it was a gift from her [the accused] that sent to her [the victim] and ih look like this lady buy di police dem dah Belmopan because nobody do nothing about it. So I want the minister of the Police Department to do something about this, arrest someone because my sister could have been killed now, she could have died.”
It sounds odd, gunmen bypassing the men to try to execute the woman, so the sister’s story has the ring of possible truth to it.
I hope police do investigate competently, and if I were the family, I’d be investing in some security — guard dog, cameras, licensed gun, etc.We only walk this Earth once, and there is no reason to let someone shorten our walk without afight.
