Jared Ranguy formally charged for the murder of his family

Jared Ranguy

A family of three was cold bloodedly murdered execution style at their Ladyville early on Sunday morning.  Robert Vellos Senior, his wife Karen Skeen, and her daughter Teena Skeen were shot in their heads before four o’clock on Sunday morning. Karen’s son Jared Ranguy was immediately detained and about forty-eight hours later, he was brought before the courts. When he arrived this morning for arraignment, Ranguy hid his face in a hooded sweater, but he didn’t escape our cameras. News Five’s Isani Cayetano was in court this morning.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

The arraignment of twenty-six year old Jared Avery Ranguy, accused of murdering his parents and sibling in the early hours of Sunday, succeeded a brief perp walk to the magistrates’ court this morning.  There he appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith, unrepresented.  Ranguy was read three charges of murder, before being remanded to the Belize Central Prison until January 10th, 2013.  The weekend massacre was an extreme act of parricide, as seventy-two year old Robert Vellos Sr., his wife Karen Skeen and his stepdaughter Teena, were heinously executed inside their home in Ladyville.

Robert and Teena were shot in the head, while Karen’s throat was cut and she was also shot in the head. It is an atrocity that, ideally, requires some form of psychiatric evaluation and intervention to unravel.  Among the many questions to be asked is, “what could have possessed a son, described by family and friends as an introvert, to mercilessly take the life of his mother, sister and stepfather?”

It has been reported that the murders may have been the result of an argument, presumably over earnings Vellos reportedly won at the Princess Casino the day before the murder.  It is also widely speculated that Ranguy has had a history of drug abuse.  Wherein lies the truth is a question that will, for now, remain unanswered.  From the attic of family house on Marage Road in Ladyille,  police were able to recover splinters of a nine millimeter round, a black bag containing the suspected murder weapon, a silver and black nine millimeter Taurus handgun, a single round of ammunition, an orange colored knife, a screwdriver, as well as articles of clothing stained in the victims’ blood.

A post mortem examination, conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Mario Estradabran, determined the cause of Teena’s death as traumatic shock due to massive brain damage, resulting from gunshot wounds to the head.  Her stepfather’s autopsy, conducted on Monday afternoon, proved that Robert Vellos Sr. died of bronchial asphyxiation due to gunshot wounds to the face.  In court today, Ranguy appeared to be disheveled when being read his charges.  He was immediately carted away to the Central Prison.

A tragedy apparently caused by something we all know, DRUGS KILL. Sadly, addicts love drugs more than anything, even their family.

Maybe other parents who are closing their eyes to their children experimenting with or using drugs will see the problem in a new light — a drug addict in the family can be dangerous to the family.

Before it’s too late, say “No” to drugs.

This tragedy is aching the hearts of many families from Chicago to L.A to San diego n back 2 Belize!! My Uncle Robert aka “Happy” was a remarkable human being, and loved life and his family, but i am with great relief knowing he is been reunited with his beloved. My condolences and prayers to all who have been affected by this senseless crime. May the Belize prison show no mercy!! i thank GOD that the gun jammed on him, that would be an easy way out, may he be haunted by his own conscience n sentenced to Hell on Earth!!!!

  3. Truth says:

Hang him publicly and add anything else to make him suffer and feel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I noted that Ranguy may have had a problem with drugs, this is what is taking our new people down. I am not saying that what he has done is right, just showing why there needs to be stronger laws on people who sell drugs, This is one of the most horrible crimes, I noted that the reporter sid that this needs psychological evaluation, I can agree that we need to get a good understanding of what happened, but if he was desperate for money to buy drugs, there in lies the answer.

I also want to congratulate the reporter Isani Cayetano, this is one of the most understandable piece of writing. Keep up the good job.

  5. ASHAMED says:

what was the motive, the police need the assistance of a psychiatrist. of a drug expert. what drugs were found in his blood. please be professional iin your investigation , are bath salts in Belize. remember the crazed naked killer eating another man’s face in Miami. please . I am so tired of hearing preliminary investigations reveal, and the police will continue their investigation. this usually means they have nothing and will dig no further. can we get an update on the drowning toddlers death, and update on the double Lebanese murder on Greg Foual murders in San Pedro.

  6. Seletar says:

@Al is right, drug dealers are random serial killers, selling poison for money. Hang them! Or force them to take their own poison and die that way.

  7. X says:

This is a tragedy I dont like how its being misconstrued that the motive behind the killing is money to buy drugs…Jared was w/ friends after midnight that day and he had plenty money on him and the “DRUGS”ur assuming he’s addicted to is not crack, heroin or any of those extremities…we do not know what transpired or why it transpired…we weren’t there

  8. Bear says:

The death penalty won’t help IF WE DON’T ACTUALLY USE IT!!! I favor speedy execution of everyone convicted of murder and attempted murder, at least. After the first few dozen hangings, when the worst criminals are buried, the violent crime rate4 will drop like a stone.

  9. enuf says:

@ X… i know i am not an expert or anything on investigation or crime solving. but why do you even mention that you all were not there? i think Jared friends need to be investigated thoroughly as well. Drugs whatever they may be, they destroy. so if i am not fooling myself here i think who ever he had been with as friends need to be sought out.

i say this because, this crime is a high power crime. i find it very hard to believe this young man killed all his relatives by himself. 3 persons to one is quite a battle. no matter the condition of the victims being older( his mother, step father) he must have had a major struggle to kill 3 of them.

to consider it further, if it is 3:30 in the morning don’t you think the mother the step father would have been lock in their room sleeping and the sister as well would have been in locked room? how did him one covered the 2 different locations so well.

i think there were atleast 2 more persons. especially considering that his aunt have mentioned that his aunt recieved a call while the killing were transpiring and mentioned that THEY are killing us.

yes she said THEY. our authorities need to step it up… pull some people and do some cross examination… ask for stories recollection and match stories and see what is the result from there

  10. GSU commanding officer says:

Days like these mek i glad X is here to clear up everything.

  11. tuf says:

to “enuf” u are saying his frends need to be investigated but that is foolish to think that his frens wud allow him to do such a thing, u need to stop talkin n sit n say ask wat was goin on in that house hold for years n nobody knew drugs and money isnt the issue for him it has to be more serious n complex

  12. A Jew says:

Looks like Amityville Horror in Belize

  13. X says:

ENUF the context in which your assuming the statement “we were not there”means to you is wrong…Im saying we as people from the outside looking in were not there as witnesses hence we should not pass judgement nor convict him..we are not judge nor jury

  14. Pam Mckoy...perez... says:

R.I.P teena karen robert senseless is and understatement…..u’ll are our earth angels…our prays and love goes out to the skeen’s fam..esp marla and marlyn skeen….GOD is in control and he got this big time…..keep the focus on him….blessed…
