Minister of National Security says crime is down
There were six murders over the past weekend alone and the continuous spate of violent crimes has residents on edge countrywide. But in his address at the B.T.I.A. AGM today, the Minister of National Security, John Saldivar said that major crimes have actually decreased over the past five months. According to Saldivar it may not be obvious because there are periodical spikes in criminal activities, but there are also lulls that go overlooked. He backed his statement with statistics, or as he called it, empirical evidence.
John Saldivar, Minister of National Security
“We have seen a gradual decrease in the accumulated major crimes from June to September of this year. our record show a total of nine hundred and one major crimes for 2012, compared to nine hundred and seventy major crimes in the same period for 2011. This is sixty-nine less incidents, six point four percent less than the 2011 figures for that same period. Those statistics are for the entire country. When we look at Belize City and compare the statistics of the same period last year, the record shows that there has been a twenty-one point one percent decrease in major crimes in the city. Of course, we expect Belize City to be leading in this statistical corner because it is no secret that we have been focusing much of our attention and resources on Belize City. But the point I am making here is that despite the sensationalizing when we experience a crime spike, when the dust is cleared and we examine the empirical evidence, we are making progress. As a matter of fact, when we compare last month’s figures to the figures since the declaration of the crime ridden areas, we have actually had a thirty-seven point five percent decrease in major crimes in Belize City. Of course and unfortunately, the six murders of the past weekend, does not put anyone in any mood to hear a pitch about what the statistics are showing.”
If he thinks he’s doing a good job, he’s crazy!
Someone said, “There’s lies, damn lies, and statistics.”
Look at all the UNSOLVED murders we have, or “solved” murders where the murderer goes free — case dismissed, acquitted, or otherwise.
WE’RE NOT SAFE. Until we are, things are NOT getting better.
Nice to see the Minister, though. I heard he’d died.
This man must the joke people the dead all over the place and thi man actually have the ….. fu come out and say crime is down are you kidding or are you just a plain idiot , go tell that to all the families who’s sons daughters and children have been brutally murdered that story they I would be so ashamed to have this kind of record that I woulda the hide from the public no the do this and come out a say crime is down are you kidding me mein damm the people in this gov. Have no sense at all from the pm down all losers . Crime is down. Hhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahhahhahhahahahah good one.
this dumb dumb is clearly out of touch with what is going on, he only like to show up to be on tv, we should chane his ministry to tv minister. somebody should inform this fool about the street life before he goes on the media with stats. tell him if he sells the product please don’t use it.
John Saldivar needs to realize that because of low confidence in the BPD, less citizens are choosing not to report crime because they feel they are wasting their time and secondly, the BPD is intentionally withholding reporting on several violent crimes that have occurred. Case in point, there were four armed robberies in the last couple weeks in southern Belize that went unreported.
crime down through his nose may be that he no smell or see it.. turn the blind eye.. and there will never be a crime ..
playing the fool won’t help while the people are feeling it..
the first step in adressing a crisis is to acknowledge it, all these fools are doing is trying to hide behind numbers, we will never get any where with this attitude. every day illegal immigrants, bar waitresses , constuction workers, farmers are arrested because of the color of their skin and the language they talk. they are not committing murders and selling dugs, how about some real arrests, Minister. the murderers of the lebanese men, the immigration officer andthe dealer who are selling passports. get those ..minister.
can he be more idiotic than this? !
I thought @Storm would have a comment here. He’s usually opinionated on this subject.
How is crime down,Wasn’t this man’s passport stolen a couple months ago from his suv?
This man is a JOKER, now that he believes CRIME IS DOWN, he faces the nation to tell them that. While murders were being commetted at a greater rate he hid behind his desk and mentioned nothing.
What a joke..He has the audacity to tell the public that crime has decrease when the people know the opposite.
Here I am.
It was reported the same day that we just set an all-time record for annual murders — 130 already! With a month yet to go, we might really reach a new high, maybe move up to 4th in world murder rates. There’s a statistic for us!
Joseph Stalin once said something like, “The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of a million is a statistic.”
We can all look around and it is obvious the country is in a crime crisis. Does Mr. Saldivar believe he can fool us?
It’s like the story of the man whose wife caught him in bed with another woman, and the husband said to his wife, “What are you going to believe — your loving husband or your lying eyes?”
lol. what a joke. That is all I have to say.
