Faking it, but immigration offense has real fine
An attempt at identity theft was foiled at the Social Security Board’s Belize City office on Friday. Forty-six year old Guatemalan national, Maria Francisca Hernandez, was caught applying for a social security card using a birth certificate belonging to Corozal resident, Juanita Campos. Hernandez is originally from Melchor de Mencos, Petén but claims she has been living on Baghdad Street in Belize City for seventeen years. Well, tonight she is a resident of the Belize Central Prison since she was unable to pay fines of three thousand dollars after pleading guilty to using a certificate she is not entitled to use and being in the country illegally. Magistrate Adolph Lucas Junior deemed Hernandez a prohibited immigrant and granted a removal order, which means that she will be deported after she pays the fines or serves a two year jail term. Hernandez attempted to renew the social security card on Friday morning, but it turns out that the S.S.B. employee who was processing the application knows the real Juanita Campos and detected discrepancies in the form. She reported the matter to her supervisor and then to the Immigration Department. When Hernandez was picked up, Immigration Officer, Miguel Iglesias, requested her documents, which she failed to provide.
What a lucky coincidence that a sharp-eyed and alert SSB employee knew the intended victim. That employee should be acknowledged and rewarded in some way for showing the highest standards of performance.
Prison and deportation is just, and it should be publicized nationwide.
