Self-professed MS-13 gang member charged and fined $500

Twenty-year old Angel Antonio Ruiz confessed to police that he is a member of the international criminal organization known as the MS-13. His admission landed him in court today where he appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Adolph Lucas Junior. Ruiz, who was being remanded to the Belize Central Prison, quickly changed his plea when he learned that bail would not be granted for the offense. Belize City police conducted a search of Ruiz’s residence on Pelican Street on Sunday, where they found a two dollar bill inscribed with MS-13 insignia. The note was confiscated and Ruiz was escorted to the Queen Street Police Station. Ruiz’s mother broke down in tears inside the courtroom while he was being remanded. The self-professed gang member, upon witnessing his mother’s emotional breakdown, requested a change of plea which he was subsequently granted. After pleading not guilty Ruiz was fined five hundred dollars, to be paid by March twenty-third, 2013 or in default he will serve five months in prison.
Why have a law against gang membership when the punishment is a joke? MS-13 are domestic terrorists, and the members should simply be locked away until they are too old and decrepit to be a danger.
And mother, save your tears for how you raised your son — membership in this gang is for a life dedicated to crime. What did you do when you saw your son starting down this path of anti-social commitment?
