Salvadoran national happy to be deported in a year
Edwin Vasquez Salinas, is going back home to Salvador, but not by choice. And though Salinas told the court he is happy to return home, he was fined one thousand dollars, which he has to pay before he leaves. When he appeared before magistrate Dale Cayetano this morning, he was slapped with a single charge of failure to comply with a visitor’s permit. Allegations are that Salinas entered Belize via the Western Border on August fifth and was granted a permit to stay in Belize until August twentieth. But according to Immigration Officers, on December seventeenth at the Maskall Checkpoint, Customs and Immigration officers informed them that a Salvadoran national had been detained. In his possession, Salinas had a passport, a Belize driver’s license and a Salvadoran identification card, but he had overstayed his welcome. His deportation order is immediate upon payment of the fine or he will spend one year in prison.
Can an illegal immigrant get a Belize driver’s license and in such a short time?
One gone, thousands more to go!
What does it cost to return this man to Salvador? $50 bus fare through Guatemala. To send him to prison will the Belizean taxpayers at least $3000 a year. The only persons to benefit from this set-up are John Woods and the minister who can share the booty. Insulting words and overstaying a visitor’s visa hardly are not crimes but because we are so stupid in Belize, everything is a crime except rape, murder, corruption.
@Belizean, getting a drivers license here quickly is easy if you just join the local cell of Hezbollah.
Malthus, you’re right if everything just comes down to dollars and cents.
Jailing illegal immigrants before you ship them back costs a little, but it sends a statement to other people in El Salvador, Belize is a hard target, and you should look for a softer one somewhere else.
We’re a tiny country, and we can be overwhelmed by uncontrolled, unregulated immigration from any of our much larger neighbors.
If GOB would open a prison work farm for non-violent first offenders, they could pay part of the cost of their imprisonment.
If he is so happy to return then why the heck did he come our way?
Iv been all over central america over the years. There are a bunch of belizean illegals in guatemala, el salvador, and honduras they are mostly kidnappers who aducted children. At least that is what we hear in the states, however its the only thing we hear since belize is virtually a irrevelant non existant once british banana colony. No wonder that dude is happy to leave
