Eric Chang; Belize City’s new Deputy Mayor
A new Deputy Mayor has been elected to City Hall. Councilor Eric Chang, in a recent election for Deputy Mayor of Belize City, was unanimously chosen by his peers at City Hall to succeed outgoing Deputy Mayor Deon Leslie, who has been serving in that capacity since March of last year. Of note is that not only is Chang the first Taiwanese national to be elected to public office but he will also be the first to hold the post as second-in-command of the Belize City Council. Chang is set to replace Leslie on March fifteenth. Mayor Darrell Bradley spoke about the annual elections as well as the expectations of his new deputy.
Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
“The convention is that every year the position of deputy mayor rotates. The outgoing deputy mayor is Deon Leslie and he was elected to that post by the council after the last election on March seventh, [2012]. And at the last council meeting which was last week the council unanimously voted to select councilor Eric Chang as the new deputy mayor and he will take office on March fifteenth. And we’re very energized by his selection of deputy mayor. He brings a lot of experience. He is an on-the-ground person. We just came off of an inspection of some of our works that are going on in the Caribbean Shores area and so I think that a lot of energy will come from his taking up the Office of Deputy Mayor. I’ve worked with Eric over the last year in the city council and I’m excited to work with him now in the post of deputy mayor.”
Councilor Eric Chang made his foray into electoral politics under former Mayor Zenaida Moya in 2009.
I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen of Chang up to now, I hope he stays on a high plane and doesn’t get consumed in the general corruption of city government.
It is good to see that young people skills and talents being cultivated. Only so our people going to develop. I hope the other councillors give the young man all their support. I hope the city id also patient and support him so he can blossom and i am sure he will do good by them. Kudos to you Eric i have been watching your progress over the years and wish you all the best in your new role.
This is a true testiment that hard work and dedication does pay off!
Keep it up my brother and best wishes!!!!!!!!!!
