No pay before the end of day; former K.H.M.H. guards
At midnight a new security firm will be assuming the responsibility of safeguarding the grounds of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. That decision, taken by the management, has raised the ire of a handful of employees, who have been dismissed in the wake of the privatization of the hospital’s security. For all, today is their last day. To make matters worse they are disgruntled that they will be receiving their severance at the end of their respective shifts, as opposed to earlier today when their cheques could have been cashed. News Five caught up with a disgruntled employee who says that the administration is taking advantage of their plight.
Sylvestra Martinez, Employee, K.H.M.H.
“Right now bwai I pissed off, I pissed, pissed, pissed off, you know. When I gone fu mi check not too long because dehn tell wi dehn wah pay we two o’clock dehn wah gih we wih check. “I take it that you’re not in approval of the new changes that are taking place with regards to the security.”
Sylvestra Martinez
“I noh give a damn weh dehn do, all I need fahn dehn da my money, only dat I want. Only dat I want, me noh need nothing from dehn noh mo.”
Isani Cayetano
“Do your other colleagues who work security share the same point of view in terms of wanting their money up front, as opposed to working ‘til seven?”
Sylevestra Martinez
“Well dehn one weh di get fi dehn check dehn noh di work. Only ‘bout five a we weh di work right now and none ah we noh di get money ‘til seven o’clock when we get offa work. All di rest dehn di get fu dehn one because dehn deh pan day off. Dehn one weh di come on seven o’clock dehn wah get fi dehn check tomorrow morning, noh tomorrow morning, midnight tonight because up to midnight dehn wah work because SOS di tek ova tonight midnight.”
News Five attempted to get a comment from K.H.M.H. Authority, but we were informed that C.E.O., Dr. Gary Longsworth, was in a meeting. From late 2012, KHMH had informed the security guards that their services would be terminated.
I’m not sure who irks me more in this article… the security guards who want to get paid before doing their work (and in Belize most of us have learned the hard way, you pay before you get no work done nor your money back) or the fact that is is news!
I know how those people feel being terminated due to the hiring of a private company but you need to work your last shift and get paid for it. Don’t be tricky, don’t expect to be paid for a shift you know you will not be working in retaliation. Please comply then complain.
I totally agree with Mason……………..I was why is this news…………….isn’t straight forward you are paid for the hours you work?
……………..and the moral of the story is?
get the facts before making comments. There is more to the story wait and see
