Several charges dropped from alleged sex offender, Bert Vasquez

Bert Vasquez

In June of last year, there was a huge uproar by residents from the Twin Towns of Santa Elena and San Ignacio after a promising youth was killed. Thirteen year old Jasmine Lowe’s body was found on June sixth, 2012 in bushes on the Cristo Rey Road. This prompted the neighborhood watch committees of the towns to conduct routine searches when reports surface of missing teenage girls. During one of the searches, a group of officers and residents discovered a female minor inside a silver car with a man who was allegedly exposed. He was later identified as twenty-eight year old Bert Vasquez. Further inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of several items including a ring that allegedly belonged to the slain teen. This subsequently led to several other female minors claiming that Vasquez attempted to lure them into his car and at times offering money. Thousands of residents protested for several days in front of the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court as the alleged murderer and sexual offender was taken to Court and read his charges. Vasquez was charged first with murder on June twentieth and the following day with eleven common assault charges, one aggravated assault and an abduction charge.  The case was adjourned several times and today, the ire of the residents has spilled on to the social media when they were informed that Vasquez appeared in court and several charges were withdrawn. Three of the charges which include Murder, Forcible Abduction and Aggravated Assault were adjourned until the seventeenth of April. Of the eight charges that remain, six were dropped. After his appearance in court today, Bert Vasquez was whisked back to the Belize Central Prison where he awaits the trial of the murder of the thirteen year old girl.

  1. Storm says:

Too fishy to go without a full public explanation by someone in charge.

Every parent in the nation should keep an eye on this case, and if the prosecution somehow fails, should take EXTREME action.

  2. Rod says:

The corruption and stupidity of this pm and gov is unlimited I told you all you should have hung this guy unuself he is going to get off to kill another young girl.

  3. BMNJ says:

Need to hold a press conference on this one – judge, defense lawyer, prosecutor, etc. Belizean public needs a lot of explanations.

  4. Real Belizean Woman says:

This is madness, absolutely unacceptable!!! I agree with Storm if the prosecution fails in this case there has to be VERY EXTREME action taken..DPP and her office really really really need to get their act together!!!

  5. cbew says:

    Belize Law Sucks!

  6. Truth says:

Within the Belize Law’s its better to be the killer than be killed! That’s true Justice with in Belize

  7. Al says:

Please do not let this man walk out of this murder if he is guilty. Key piece of evidence the child’s ring in his car, if this is true, then please do not let this man go. The only way that ring got there is that the child was in the car and maybe left it there to be found or it fell of her hands while she was fighting for her life.

  8. Nimbo says:

I recall somebody stating that he will go free when he first got caught…I was doubtful back then with the amount of “evidence”, hype and least to say the amount of charges brought on by several teenagers…now starting to believe it. Only in Belize rings so true

  9. Ishmael says:

This entire government is corruption and the law is slack. I don’t believe in this judicial system. We need to do our own justice! This good-for-nothing government talks a lot, and no action. Hang this guy, one less sex offender on the streets.

  10. Ishmael says:

Just kill this guy and end of problems

HEY GUYS THAT’S WHY I ALWAYS SAY TOOTH 4 A TOOTH EYE 4 AN EYE…..MEIN IF THIS GUY GET OFF SIX HE MIGHT BE A FREE MAN SOON….I WOULD HANG HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Seletar says:

If Vasquez hits the streets a free man after all he has done over so many years, I hope the good neighbors will form a posse to stalk him until his death so he can never get his hands on another little girl to rape and slaughter.

  14. Jan says:

    ONLY IN BELIZE !!!!!!!!!!

  15. Hatari says:

Come on folks, you know that he is going to walk. Our criminal justice system only convicts 3% of all serious crimes. The police screw up the evidence, witnesses are afraid to testify, and the prosecutors haven’t got a clue how to prosecute. We are screwed and the ……. will walk. Oh, but we can convict a pregnant woman found in a house with a few shotgun shells! This is ridiculous!

  16. Starbros Intel says:

I bet if you or me or any respectful citizen kills this guy, the law will follow and convict us immediately. A judicial system like this cannot be tolerated! We make this country, not the country make us. It is time to start to act. Stand firm.
