B.T.I.A. Orange Walk Chapter condemns students’ beating of monkey to death

As we reported in our previous newscasts, residents of Orange Walk, as well as various conservation organizations, have expressed outrage over an act of extreme animal cruelty, which led to the death of a howler monkey at the hands of a group of teenagers.  The incident occurred at the Belize High School of Agriculture in San Lazaro Village, where the primate was beaten and mistreated by several students.  In the wake of the brutal attack, the Forest Department has launched an investigation and is currently exploring legal action against the minors.  The Belize Tourism Industry Association’s Orange Walk Chapter has also issued a release appealing to schools to introduce in their curricula activities geared towards raising awareness about the natural value and the economic importance of Belize’s wildlife.  The howler monkey is an endangered species that is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.

please can we ‘done’ with this story already. the howler monkey is an animal aka NOT a human being. let ‘s not all get atop that slippery slope where animals start getting equated with people and pretty soon we will mock white people who go through fire and water and sacrifice themselves to save flee-ridden potlickers from fire and from drowning. just google “white woman dies saving animal from certain death in icy waters. lauded heroine by the nation, gets presidential medal of freedom” and you will get 17,432 hits. ON THE OTHER HAND, those boys will be psychologically scarred for life after the so-called justice system, incited by the zealous tree hugger community, is done with them. SLAP those boys on the wrist, wag your finger at them, and try to educate them and their guardians (who are ultimately culpable) about unnecessary cruelty to dumb animals, but don’t try to convince them that animals and people are on the same value level.

  2. Eye in the Sky says:

Quit the b.s. talk and give all of them some Jail Time.

Even if it is only 2 weeks in Kobe it will teach them a lesson not to be savages.

A monetary fine is not enough.

  3. Storm says:

Why does this simple matter need such a long investigation? Charge them, convict them, and lock them up — especially the useless, depraved teacher.

  4. Al says:

If these are the kinds of people that are teaching our children our country is in far deeper trouble than I imagined.. It is almost like we have become a country of savages. Pleas let us band together and turn things around.

@Storm, I agree with you if they did it and we have witnesses charge them and be done with it.

  5. Seletar says:

Trudy, I think the concern of many of us goes beyond the cruelty to the animal. There are plenty of studies that show that children who commit animal cruelty and set fires have a strong likelihood of becoming serious, violent criminals as adults. So it’s an indicator of what may be to come from these boys, and we’d be fools to close our eyes to the danger

  6. Mary says:

Trudy if we don’t teach our kids to feel for a living thing how do we expect them to care for others. I am not saying animals are the same as human being but we were all made by god . Respect and caring and love begins at home . If that was my kid involve in that I would punish him or her.

  7. FYI says:

TRUDY the howler monkey is a ANIMAL what you are trying to say is so right but if correction dosn’t start at school and at home might as well give them some guns since they are already in the rough of wrong doing in the future….The MONKEY aka ANIMAL was in its own habitat…we as humans tend to inhabit the nature of the being….SO next time be smart and not silly
