The arrival of the Pallottine nuns reenacted
One hundred years ago, on March seventeenth, 1913 four nuns made their way to Belize, and from there up the Belize River by boat to Cayo, then by horse and buggy to Benque where they settled. That was the birth of the Pallottine movement in Belize, and their achievements to this day, especially in the area of education, are many. To celebrate their hundredth anniversary the Pallottine sisters staged a re-enactment of their arrival and settlement, and they were joined in the celebration by hundreds of supporters from communities who came out to show their appreciation. News Five was on hand for the special occasion and put together a package which we’ll air in tomorrow’s newscast, so be sure to tune in.
I remember when a child growing in Benque, the likes of Sister Gonzaga, Sister Germine, Sister Rosario, Sister Conchita and Sister Joseph. I used to work in the convent at Saint Joseph Street. It hurts me now to hear that a certain deacon has become the master of that building when it should be treasured as a historical site.
One hundred years of doing important charitable work here is quite an accomplishment that deserves serious recognition! I”m not Catholic, but I am grateful for the good work they have done and the countless Belizean lives they have improved in so many ways.
