Contraband sugar may have origins in Belize

While cigarettes were seized in the south, the smuggling of sugar across the border is a lucrative business.  According to an article published in Novedades Quintana Roo on Sunday, the local sugar continues to find its way across the Mexican border. The Rio Hondo has become the illegal crossing point for sugar into Quintana Roo. Business is brisk and it goes like this. Producers first acquire bags bearing the company logo of Pucte San Rafael; the empty sacks are brought into Belize, loaded with sugar and then transported back to Mexico by boat and later by trucks to various areas within the country. The article states that Mexican producers are up in arms because the smuggling of the sugar is cutting into their livelihood.
