Should there be an October 6th referendum within Guatemala?

With the debate focusing now on the referendum, our last question was if viewers thought that government was soft on Guatemala. An overwhelming ninety-two percent voted yes while the rest said no: Turning to tonight’s question: Should Belize proceed to hold a referendum on October 6, if Guatemala does not? 1. Storm says:

The question is hard to answer, because I never wanted a referendum. The question is not really clear whether it means to delay the referendum, as Guatemala apparently wants now, or to cancel it. I say cancel it if possible, otherwise hold it now and get the ICJ voted down. The possibility of submitting our liberty and sovereignty to a panel of foreigners is unacceptable to me and the overwhelming majority of Belizeans.

Why should we ever roll the dice with Guatemala, which has NEVER ruled Belize?

  2. Lucas says:

If Belize votes NO; Guatemala will argue that it is pointless for them to carry their own referendum since the compris is that both countries must agree. Guatemala suddenly woke up and found themselves kooked to the ICJ to the ICJ and are desperately trying to unhook themselves. It took Belize over fifty years to have Guatemala where we have them now. Belize must not let Guatemala get away. Having our referendum without Guatemala having theirs at the same time, is not an OPTION. If we go our own, we may end up losing very badly.

  3. Gone fishing says:

    may not be needed.
Sedi yesterday said GOB was going to ICJ Oct 6.

    but it is needed,
with $10,000,000 to be spent, there are many hungry cronies to be paid.
    legal vote buying?

  4. Rutes Man says:

Guatemala should have their referendum as agreed on however if they don’t Belize should but withhold the counting until after Guatemala does have theirs and there should be a deadline established for Guatemala to have theirs and if they fail to do so the ruling should be in Belize’s favor.

  5. bzd2dbone says:

This is the time for Belize to take the strong lead. Now that guatemala is playing as though they are thinking twice, we need to tell them, either you continue as agreed or call off the claim once and for all….

  6. Genotu Rembiuos says:

WHO STARTED THIS ICJ ALTOGETHER ?
WHO THINKS, OR WANTS TO THINK THAT GUATEMALA WILL EVER EVER GIVE UP THEIR CLAIM ????
GUATEMALA WILL NEVER NEVER STOP THEIR POLITICS OF CLAIMING BELIZE.
GUATEMALA JUST SWELLING ITS PEOPLE HEAD WITH RICHES OF BELIZE CLAIM!!!
A MILLION ICJ CAN TELL GUATEMALA THAT THEY ARE STUPID, THAT WILL NOT STOP GUATEMALA FROM CLAIMING BELIZE !!! POLITICS…SO THEIR POOR CAMPESSINOS DON`T SEE THE THE HELL AND MESS OF THE GUATEMALAN GOV.

  7. subKonshus says:

Sedi Elrington is known for talking garbage. Nothing he ever says makes any logic or common sense. So from the fact he wants to proceed to the ICJ with or without Guatemala is a clue and a give away that we should not proceed with the referendum. He is the same idiot that says Belize have no border. So why go to dispute a border that does not exist? But as usual, our Belizean politicians are like harlots chasing after money. They would bend down now to get their slippery hands on that 10 mil. Having a referendum was a mutual agreement, that it would be held simultaneously. If it can’t be held in that fashion then all bets should be off until another mutual date is established.

  8. Giovanni says:

I cant fathom why we would put our sovereignity in the hands of a few foreigners known as ICJ.Instead we need to hire Bzeans to open the border line and then distribute all that land along the border .Occupy it.It is ours.Presently Belize is almost on its knees in front of Guat and OAS.Stand up Belize.

  9. Storm says:

Genotu has a point in his comment, for failed Guat governments, the claim to take over Belize is a distraction from their own domestic problems, like institutional oppression of millions of Mayans. The Guat claim will never disappear, they need it. Someone said, “If the devil didn’t exist, we would have to invent one.” In some ways we are Guatemala’s devil and its dream at the same time.
